Last weekend Leek RUFC 1st XV entertained Tamworth at F Ball Park , Cheddleton on a warm sunny afternoon with a perfect playing pitch and the first home game of the season for the new capatain Jason Milner.

Leek were without vice captain Gary Mcdermott and were able to call on the services of Ian Harris at fly half. With head coach Ian Gittens ill , assistant Coach Chris Mudd started with Joe Newton Taylor, Luke Grainger and Jason Milner in the front row with Tom Sims and Luke Hardern in the second row, returning Adam Nettell and Matt Slinn started as flankers with Dave Ackerley at no Support Ian Harris. Simon Drew played scrum half with Shane Dickers and George Hunt in the centres and Nick Palmer and Adam Smith on the wings and Sam Hunt as full back .

Leek started strongly and after 2 mins Leek Forwards were driving forward which allowed Harris to score under the posts which Sam Hunt converted. This gave Leek a confident start which Tamworth struggled to contain, after 8 mins Palmer caught the ball on the half way line and made a superb chip over the oncoming player , he was able to gather and passed to Newton Taylor who was in support who then passed to Dickers who went over to score, Hunt again converted to take a 14 to 0 lead .

On 11 mins Tamworth got back into the game with a well worked 5 metre line out which as gathered and after a period of mauling the winger scored in the corner , Tamworth failed to convert .On 28 mins Dickers had to be replaced with a foot injury which affected Leeks play, he was replaced by Lucas Buxton who moved onto the wing and Palmer moving into the centre . Shortly after a poor pass whilst Leek were on the attack allowed for an interception by Tamworth who ran the length of the pitch to score and covert .These few mins affected Leeks confidence and on half time a penalty kick to Tamworth allowed them to take a 14 -15 lead which did not seem possible at the start.

On the start of the second half Tamworth scored early on after poor passage of play from Leek with some poor tackling and decisions. Captain Milner began to rally his players and at one point a darting run from Sam Hunt appeared to be on for a try, however a superb diving tackle from a Tamworth player 5 metres from there try line prevented the score.

Leek continued to press but were unable to secure the ball in the lineouts and move to the fast backs that Leek have and as a result Leek were unable to make the domination as they did in the first 10 mins of the game . The game ended with a loss to Leek of 17 -28 , captain Milner said after the game"This was a disappointing result however we can take lots of positives out of it, we just need to improve the decision making and convert the pressure we had early on "
