CANNOCK 2's 7 -14 LEEK 3's
Leek 3rd XV travelled to Cannock on Saturday to face the usual tough hard fighting Cannock pack on a heavy pitch.
The game started fairly even but it was Leek that had to do most of of the defending.
With the sun on their backs but choosing to play uphill first it was Leek who put the first points on the board. Cannock, who always try to dominate the game through their forwards were not able to penetrate a sturdy leek Defence and with one of a few breaks into Cannock half Leek were able to play the ball out to the centres and a strong penetrating run from Hill enabled him to crash over the line, the conversion was pulled slightly wide but the lead had been established.
The lead was not held for to long before Cannock were able to register their own points when they were able to crash over the line through missed tackles and the resulting conversion gave them the slim 2 point lead going into the break.
The second half started brightly for Leek now playing with the advantage of the slight slope and with Cannock now loosing their composure it was Leek who regained the lead when Cannock were penalised for killing the ball, the option to go for the posts was not to be missed and so it was Hicks who converted to go 7- 8 into the lead.
The remainder of the game was was eagerly contested by both sides but it was Cannock who, through ill discipline were penalised a further 3 times which through the trusted boot of captain Hicks enabled Leek to increase the lead to 7-14 .
Leek who fielded a father son combination in Dwaine & Liam Robinson for only the 2nd time fought hard and with some stout defending and some excellent closing down & tackling by M.O.M James Allcock , with Liam Hill pushing him a close 2nd, were able to see the game out and return home with a hard fought win matching both the 1sts & 2nds in what was a good weekend for LEEK RUFC.
