FOUR DEFEATS IN A ROW

FOUR DEFEATS IN A ROW

Steve Reynolds27 Feb 2011 - 21:07

Leek Town crashed to a fourth successive defeat in a not for the feint hearted battle at in-form Grantham that dumped Blues to third-bottom of the table just one place and five points above the dreaded drop.

Blues boss Neil Cox (pictured) tinkered with his team, restoring Wayne Corden and Anthony Malbon to the starting line-up with Jamie Haynes and Paul Rutter relegated to the subs bench.

In the 12th minute Grantham should have taken the lead but when Lee Potts crossed into the box, Rhys Lewis shot over with the goal at his mercy.

The Gingerbreads kept up the pressure and another Potts cross was deflected for a corner but when the cross came in Ben Saunders blasted inches over the crossbar.

The closest Leek came to a goal was in 19th minute when Mark Ruddock's header from a Paul Taylor corner was cleared off the line.

The home side went ahead ten minutes later when Jamie McGhee knocked home the loose ball after Danny Roberts saved Ben Saunders shot at full stretch.

Blues lost Christian Millar to injury and finished the half a goal down.

Leek came close to levelling the scores in the 53rd minute when Leigh Skellern laid the ball off to Corden whose curling shot produced a good save out of Murray.

A minute later Blues were denied a penalty when both Andy Taylor and Skellern had shots charged down but the referee turned down the appeals.

Moments later Grantham's Matt Millns was sent for picking up his second yellow card but Blues still struggled to break them down and it was the Gingerbreads who almost scored again on the hour when Blues hacked two efforts off the line before Roberts made a smart save.

The games was up on 80 minutes when Leek were hit on the break with Sam Saunders scoring the home side's second finishing off a fine ball by McGhee.
