The former Blues player is currently with Norton United in Vodkat Division One, but is believed to be interested in linking up with Leek manager Wayne Johnson.

Leek have served Norton with seven days' notice of approach for Macari, pictured right, who watched their UniBond League Cup defeat at home to Curzon Ashton on Wednesday.

Johnson has worked without assistance – other than kit man Ken Ashford – since coach Andy O'Connor left in November of last season, and has been complimented by club chairman Andy Wain for doing "a tremendous job".

Johnson said: "I am coping okay and am not looking to bring in Paul for myself. It is more for the club and the players who might welcome hearing a different voice.

"I gather Paul is now interested in getting into the coaching side of the game and I still think he is capable of doing a job off the bench."

Leek kissed goodbye to their prospects of landing silverware this season in going down 4-2 to Division One North side Curzon Ashton.
Leek drew level at 2-2 with goals by Nick Ward and Paul Rutter, but largely dug their own grave with defensive errors.

Johnson said he was "disgusted" with the manner of the performance and accused his players of being "too sloppy and too casual".

He explained: "Leek have not won a trophy for 14 years, so the League Cup was high on my list. Curzon scored one good goal, the rest were gifts."
