ANCHORS SCORE LATE WINNER AGAINST LEEK

AGONISING DEFEAT ON TEESIDE

The Blues will curse their luck after a gut wrenching defeat to Stockton Town, and a very competitive performance on a midweek Wednesday, but all the talk from the Blues travelling faithful will be about the two key decisions the man in black made which massively effected the outcome of the game.

With the recall of Ollie Heywood back to Chester, Josh Brehaut shuffled his pack for the fixture bringing Nathan Okome back into the starting line up and George Milner being preferred to Billy Reeves, after a short illness. Brendon Daniels also returned to the sixteen after a lengthy lay off recovering from injury.

The game commenced and Leek struggled to get into their passing game on a surface that was very fast and unforgiving, the home side coped with it much better constantly moving the ball forward with out getting it under control. The first big talking point was the on 11 minutes when Leek did find Alex Hurst on the left, he jinked and unleashed a fierce shot that Nathan Hacker spilled, Louis Potts was the only player to react and tapped in rebound. However the joy was short lived as Potts was harshly ruled offside, and only video analysis will confirm whether he was or wasn't as the linesman clearly guessed.

It was then Stocktons turn to attack with a well delivered corner headed just wide by Josh Scott. The home side were having a good spell and on 23 minutes a ball ran to the edge of the area and Cam Painter unleashed a rocket that was charged down and just flew over the bar for another corner.

The game ebbed and flowed with Stockton continuing to play directly and Leek trying to unlock their defence, a couple of very intelligent through balls again just catching Hurst and Potts offside.

On 37 minutes Leek did break through Stocktons lines with Louis Potts breaking the high line and having a clear run and shot on goal, just dragging his shot wide. The big striker was causing all sorts of problems but will be disappointed not to have hit the target.

Stockton ended the half with yet another corner and it was Josh Scott again who connected with a header, only to see it fly over the bar. The first half ended, a fairly even affair but Leek having the better chances.

The Blues started really well in the second half but it was the Anchors who tested the Leek goal, when Lewis King unleashed a fierce shot which stung Dino Visser's hands. George Milner received a yellow card for a pull back on a Stockton player, and shortly after was replaced by Billy Reeves.

The Blues continued to press and on the hour mark fashioned a good chance, after a bouncing ball in the box Hayden Campbell squeezed a shot off which was blocked in the box. The Blues continued their good work and from the start of the second half had been the dominant side.

As the half progressed Stockton were having more and more joy and coming into the game and this time it was Adam Nicholsons turn to head wide. A couple minutes later a deflected cross fell to Kevin Hayes who drilled a left footed shot through the penalty area only to be denied by the base of the post.

Stockton were beginning to exert more pressure and create more chances, on 78 minutes it was danger man Michael Sweet who shot directly a Visser, the initial shot being spilled and Visser getting to the loose ball before Scott.

Leek weathered the small storm and gathered their composure and it looked for a long time that the game was heading for a goalless draw, with Leek defending stoutly and the referee indicating 3 minutes of added time. However there was last chance for the Anchors and a controversial moment in the game.

A corner was awarded to Stockton who whipped in a short ball to the edge of the area, Tom Curl pressured the Stockton forward with the ball seemingly going out for a goal kick. The referee inexplicably gave another corner which was delivered to the far post and headed back across by Adam Nicholson to Josh Scott, who controlled the ball and squeezed it off to the big centre half Tommy Coulthard who rifled the ball high into the roof of the net giving Visser no chance. The controversy wasnt over as in the celebrations Adam Nicholson was sent over for barging into Billy Reeves and then Tom Curl.

In an effort to try and rescue a point the Leek management team brought on Ty Onyeka and Ollie Shenton but the Blues could only craft one more attack before the referee blew the final whistle.

So a valiant effort for the Blues who were excellently supported by 30 or so travelling fans, but a fruitless visit to the North East and the end of an unbeaten run that stretched back to mid December.
