Leek Town Ladies got off to a winning start in their 2020/21 league campaign as they travelled away to local rivals City of Stoke Women.
Leek started the game of well and they got an early goal scoring inside 2 minutes, with Chantelle Gallagher doing well to hold the ball up to play it through to the on running Michaela Lockett who made no mistake side footing the ball past the keeper. Despite the early goal for Leek, City of Stoke grew into the game and tried to test the back line who stood firm throughout the game. Both Cassie Hyde and Naomi Sale-Hancock blocked City of Stokes’ efforts. Gina Rushton and Emma Smith also played their part with dealing with balls in behind and stopping crosses into the box. On the counter attack Leek looked threatening and had chances of themselves but saw their efforts to go wide of the goal. However just before half time City of Stoke did draw level in the game as a cross field ball come across their box to their winger who fired the ball past Beth Cottrell.
In the second half Leek showed their quality and upped their performance, especially with the introduction of Jenny Hesketh and Katie Gibbons into midfield, with Jenny coming close in the 53rd minute as she beat the fullback but saw her driven shot go wide off the post. Leek were starting to cruise and Katie Maya found the feet of Chantelle Gallagher, who slotted the ball home for Leeks second. Leek got a third as Rehanne Mellor was introduced to the game, getting an assist within minutes being on. She got the ball of the left and played it into the run of Katie Gibbons and with the goalkeeper coming out to narrow the angle, she expertly chipped the ball into the far corner of the goal. Just before Leek got their fourth goal of the game, Leeks keeper Beth Cottrell pulled of a magnificent save, as she was diving backwards she clawed the ball off the line and then reacted to smother the second shot. Leeks fourth came from the same duo, Rehanne Mellor who played a great through ball behind the defence for Katie Gibbons to run onto and fire the ball into the back of net.
