Unbeaten Leigh 2nd XV made the journey to Burnage RUFC in the cup semi finals for what turned out to be an enthralling encounter. Greeted during the week with the news the game was to be played on the 3g pitch Burnage seemed to hand the advantage to the home side that were used to the surface, unaware that Leigh train on 3g pitches.
The game kicked off and Leigh started the slower of the two. Early in the game the penalty count started to mount and fortunately both penalties were missed by Burnage. This seemed to kick start the visitors as the forwards started to rally up the field with strong carries from Roberts and co. A resulting scrum saw skipper Mayren put the visitors ahead cutting a line from a planned backs move which saw him go under the posts for the score. Ryan converted for a 7-0 lead.
Leigh’s try seemed to spark the home side into action and once again reclaiming a kick from the restart piled immense pressure on the Leigh defence which proved hard to break down until a rolling maul from the Burnage forwards took them over to even the score with a converted try. Shortly after the home side try Leigh lost fly half Griffiths to what turned out to be a broken ankle! Strapped up and undeterred he came back into the fray just before the half time whistle, where Leigh had a real chance to take the lead from a penalty which sadly struck the posts. 7-7 the half time score.
The second 40 minutes where not what Burnage was expecting. The unbeaten Leigh side really began to up the ante and show their class. The forwards started to dominate the set pieces and carry strong down the middle to which the home side has no reply. A well worked latch from back row Costello and Boyle created the gap for Leigh’s classy backs to give hands and put Oli Shepherd in the corner that finished well from 20m out close to the touchline! The scores 12-7.
Momentum carried from the try and Leigh where well on top of the game camped deep in the home sides half. Burnage resolutely defended but a big pick up and carry from No.8 Boyle saw him barge his way over the line seemingly carrying defenders with him! Kicking was proving difficult, Ryan missing the conversion. 17-7 to the visitors.
It seemed the floodgates had opened but credit to the home side who stuck at it and gave Leigh as good as they got! A late penalty gave Leigh the chance to wrap the game up with Morris-Williams on kicking duty, but once again the points where missed! 17-7 the final score.
Leigh advance to the final with an excellent second half performance to face Preston Grasshoppers for the trophy. Credit to Burnage RUFC who gave Leigh the semi final the cup deserves. A very classy team who we wish luck to for the rest of the season! We would like to thank them for their post game hospitality and kind words. We also wish a speedy recovery to Griffiths playing on a broken ankle, what a trooper!
