Leiston ‘A’ visited Woolverstone United Reserves in their first ever match in SIL Division 4, reported on by Trevor Elmy.
Leiston started strongly and dominated possession but found Adam Hubbard in the home goal in inspired form as he produced two excellent saves from Jourdan Kiwomya and Grant Overett. Overett then struck the crossbar with an excellent effort. With Harvey Garnham in the home goal a virtual spectator it was no surprise when in the 20th minute DREW CONNICK was on hand to follow up another fine save by Hubbard to fire into the bottom corner. Overett and Kiwomya both had good chances to increase the lead before half time but on both occasions their efforts went wide of goal. Perhaps a pivotal moment came right on half time when Sam Allen was injured in a collision with his own goalkeeper Harvey Garnham and was unable to continue. Leiston, already having losing Josiah Laws with injury, meant Leiston had to reshuffle their defence having lost two centre backs.
JOURDAN KIWOMYA increased Leiston’s lead in the 54th minute with a good finish. Woolverstone never gave up however and realised with makeshift defenders Leiston were vulnerable to the ball straight down the middle. This was to happen on two occasions with the visitors scoring on both occasions to level the scores within five minutes of each other. The Blues thought they had sealed victory in the 80th minute when KION PARCHMONT found the roof of the net from a tight angle. But the hosts were to level again when another ball downfield was able to bounce twice before the ball was shot past Garnham with five minutes still to play. It was the home team who looked more likely to grab a winner in the final few moments but young Garnham in the away goal made two fine saves to ensure the youngsters gained a point.
