Glenzie maintained the pressure at the top of the West Div 1 league with a comprehensive victory over GHA in the Sunday sunshine at Viewfield .

Despite the scoreline GHA provided a strong challenge and their failure to get over the try line was testimony to the excellent Glenzie defence with the forwards in particularly impressive form.

An early line out gave Glenzie the chance to exert some pressure which paid off handsomely. Meek won the ball and passed to Burns who set off on a surging run to set up a ruck on the 5m line. The ball came loose and Haddock kicked it through the defence and pounced on it to open the scoring. The Glenzie lineout worked well all afternoon and it was a lineout steal which set up Burns to run in a second try with some deft footwork and strength. Scrum half Cruikshanks then extended the lead collecting from a ruck and delivering to Paul, Lennox and Shanahan who’s strong running and excellent off- loading gave him the ball to finish between the posts. The first half ended with GHA camped on the Glenzie try line, but they failed to score contained by committed tackling and great organisation by the forwards. Half time score 19-0 to Glenzie.

Early in the second half the Glenzie forwards were again in control at the set piece, holding the ball well in the scrum until Ross released Burns to score his second try of the day. A raft of subs brought new life into GHA and they were rewarded with their only score of the day. The powerful GHA fullback carved his way through the Glenzie defence and a couple of missed tackles cost them the score. With a penalty awarded on the half way directly in front of the post Burns long range effort fell just short but, fortunately for Glenzie, was knocked on to give them a scrum on the 5m line. Another solid scrum and well-timed passing saw Burns run in for his try hat trick. Final score 29-7. The Glenzie forwards played an outstanding game providing a solid platform and enabling the backs to enjoy some good passages of play.

With just two must win games remaining Glenzie remain on track to finish top of the league but they are next in action on Sunday,23rd February with a cup game against Hamilton.
