Lenzie entertained Newton Stewart on Saturday, hoping to kickstart their league campaign after a difficult start to the season.

Newton however were full of confidence after two early season wins and started the brighter. Playing with a strong wind they pinned Lenzie back in the early stages and their stand off scored a good try under the posts after a defensive mix up.

Newton continued to press and Lenzie were given a massive let off when the Newton number 8 barged through some tackles and over the line, only to drop the ball when trying to ground it.

This proved to be the turning point in the game, as from that point on Lenzie were the better team. Half backs McCrae and Paterson worked well together and brought returning forwards McLean and Milano on to the ball at pace. Number 8 Slade was causing havoc in the Newton defence and only strong defending kept Lenzie out. Half time 7-0 Newton.

Lenzie kicked off with the wind at their backs and immediately put Newton under pressure. Strong running by Wood and centres Scouller and McWilliams took Lenzie into the 22 and after a number of powerful runs by Letford and Moore, Slade scored in the corner. Scoullar missed the conversion but made amends shortly after with an excellent penalty from the 10 metre line. 8-7 after 60 minutes.

The Lenzie back 3 were linking well and Nisbet put in a number of long kicks to keep Newton pinned back. From one of these kicks, Lenzie won a scrum and after McDermott and Hairbrother went close, McWilliams scored under the posts. Conversion was good. 15-7 after 73 minutes.

Lenzie however switched off at the kick off and the impressive Newton number 8 scored out wide. The conversion was missed and 15-12 after 74 minutes.

The Lenzie fans’ worries were put at ease though after an excellent team try was scored to seal the game. Binnings and Strachan hit the ball up the middle and good hands by Paterson and McWilliams put Small away. Small drew in the last defender and put Hunter under the posts. Conversion was good. There was still time for Newton to get a penalty under the posts, which was kicked to give them a losing bonus point. Final score 22-15.

An excellent team performance by Lenzie and bodes well for the rest of the season.
