2s finish the season with a hard fought victory over Otliensians

The fixture merry go round on Friday afternoon finally worked out for the best, after Castleford dropped out Friday morning and the fixture secretary retreating to a German bunker for the weekend a game against Otliensians was arranged by tea time. With the sun out and a number of students returning from their Easter break getting fed, clothes washed and generally mothered for the past month Leos assembled a strong squad of 19 plus DTM for the final game of the season.

With the sun out and the ground firm it was a great day for some running rugby and with plenty of ball players rather than crash ball merchants in the Leos lineup the ball went wide at pretty much every opportunity much to the disappointment of some of the big lads. Leos should have opened the scoring after a chip over from Tweds was gathered by Porter, Leos flooded through but were unable to link up and provide the killer pass to open the scoring. Leos were enjoying the majority of territory and the opening score came from a piece of individual brilliance from Max Sears. Having taken a clearing kick down field Max used his trade mark over the top step to beat the initial chasers before finding a gaping hole in the middle of pitch before selling the full back with a dummy to score.

Leos continued to enjoy territory and possession and their 2nd try came from a stolen lineout, a wrap around in midfield put Oli Hill in space who showed good pace to get around the remaining defenders to go in under the posts to give Leos a 14-0 lead midway through the 1st half. Leos probably then suffered from an element of overconfidence with a loose pass from Billy Marsh which was hacked through and despite half of the Leos side having the chance to drop on it and tidy the ball up no one actually managed to do this allowing Otliensians to hack through and score. The fact the ball was in a different postcode to the dead ball line and player awarded the try seemed irrelevant and was a warning Leos needed to heed.

Leos finished the half as they had started with Archie Pine-Coffin taking a loose clearance kick then defying gravity of the 2nd team pitch slope and beating the defence inside a postbox before lifting the ball for Tim Martin to score in the corner to give the home side a 19-7 lead at half time.

With the heat taking its effect Leos freshened up the pack which gave DTM the chance to make his seasonal debut along with the rest of the subs the need to start the half well and put the game to bed was the key message from everyone. To be fair to Otliensians they worked out the best area to attack and took a more direct route to the try line meaning Leos spent most of the 3rd quarter camped in their own half defending. Some excellent scrambling defence held firm for a good 10 minutes until finally the defence was breached and Otley were well and truly back in the game. They went close again straight from the kick off but some how Calum Grant got back to scrag down their outside centre and hold the ball up over the line. Otliensians leveled with 10 minutes to go Leos finally running out of bodies to make the tackles and it was all square at 19 all.

Leos shuffled the pack again to keep legs fresh and from turn over ball kicked long and chased hard and finally had an element of territory to try and apply some pressure back to the visitors. Discipline had been an achilles heel all half and the first attack to try and get back in the lead resulted in a penalty to Otley. Having got the ball back from the lineout not being straight Leos attacked from the base of the scrum with strong carries from Joe Martin, Tweddle, Porter and Hill getting Leos close to the line before Tim Martin came back on the angle to bounce and twist through a number of would be tacklers to score making it 24-19. With the conversion missed Leos had 2 minutes to cling on and claim the victory.

Thanks fully for all involved with the home team Ref Cadge bought the game to a close with no further scores and a hard fought victory secured to end the season on a high. Everyone retired to the changing room for a meat and cheese board kindly provided by Farmer Jim.
