RUTHLESS WHITES OVERWHELM BRIGG IN STUNNING TEAM PERFORMANCE

Not so long ago, the Gaffer said that if his team played to its full potential someone would be on the end of a good hiding.

Today was that day and the victims were Brigg.

I am sure you don't need reminding that the Whites have scored only three goals in four matches before today.

The FA Cup gave them a chance to cast off the shackles of what has been a disappointing start to the league season so far and express themselves as a unit that can play attractive, passing football.

The Hartsholme faithful were not disappointed.

In the third minute, Andy Hutchinson beat the offside trap after being cleverly put through by Kallum Smith and steered the ball past the advancing Brigg keeper.

The first half performance showed confidence, good team work and the desire to attack.

Brigg were made to work very hard but in fairness to them, they gave as good as they got up to half time.

The main feature of the opening 45 minutes was the threat that Hutchinson carried with his speed off the mark.

As a target man he was being found by his team mates who were grateful to see the striker give himself time to lay the ball off.

It was a remarkable performance from Andy considereing he has only just recovered from illness and injury. In fact it was his first start of the season.

Ten minutes after the interval Glynn Cotton hit a free kick from the left touchline which deceived everyone and hit the Brigg net to double the Whites lead.

Fifteen minutes later, Kallum Smith struck home from a very tight angle after excellent work from Hutchinson to make it 3-0.

Even the defenders were getting in on the act. If you are as old as me and can remember the 1970 World Cup Final between Italy and Brazil you may recall a mazy run by the Brazillian central defender, Clodahldo where he danced round four opponents(have a look on You tube, well worth it)

Callum Ward's foray into the heart of the Brigg defence was similar only his progress was stopped by a cynical foul.

It was that man Smith again who wrapped things up with his second and the Whites fourth after a determined run saw him find the Brigg net.

Lots of positives to take out of the game. Keeper Robert Peet didn't have to make a save which is credit to the defence.

Keegan Everington, on loan from Lincoln City, fitted in really well and considering that was his first full game of the season, the youngster acquitted himself really well.

Andy Hutchinson provided the spark (thanks, Jason) to most of the attacking moves.

In short I haven't seen the lads play that well for a long time.It really was an excellent all round performance.

Another thing to note, (thanks Peter Doyle) is that in five matches there has only been one caution. Compare that to last year and you can see the players just want to get on with the game and focus on playing and not showing dissent.

Stamford await at home in the next round. Let's home the lads can carry this cup form into next week's league match at Gresley. I believe they can.
