On Saturday the Whites take their first ever trip to face Ossett United.

However, it won’t be the first trip to Ossett, where we have faced Town and United many times over the years, firstly in the Yorkshire League, then in the Northern Counties East and finally in the Northern Premier League.

The merger of the two Ossett clubs has been well documented and looks to have been a great and successful change of direction.

In 1973-74 Lincoln United won their second Yorkshire League title and were replaced as champions the following year by Ossett Albion who had been promoted from the second division the following season.

Both Ossett clubs had a huge part to play in the Yorkshire and subsequently the same was true with the formation of the Norther Counties East League in 1982.

In 1995 United won 5-0 at Ossett Albion to clinch the league title and promotion to the Northern Premier League. I remember the superb gesture by the Albion players as they gave us a guard of honour upon leaving the field.

In 1998 Ossett Albion were the Champions and Ossett Town the runners-up in the NCE Premier Division. Town progressed to the Northern Premier League whilst Albion had continued success in the NCE.

In 2004 both Lincoln United and Ossett Town took their places in the re-organised NPL premier Division after the formation of the Confernce North. The final table that season :

Spennymoor United: 12 points deducted

Now a new era begins, it seems a long time ago that Fred Green was in charge of sides in Ossett when journeys were made on a very quiet M1 motorway.

On Saturday United will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing FA Trophy exit whilst Ossett will be looking to back up a superb win at home to Colwyn Bay in the same competition.

We are still without Paul Grimes and Rob Norris but late fitness tests might be an option.

Those not travelling to Ossett might well enjoy a trip down to the Sun Hat Villas Stadium where our Development Squad are at home to Wyberton in the Lincolnshire League Challenge Cup. That game kicks off at 3pm.
