I caught up with Andy Toyne last week before the game at Lincoln Moorlands.

In the first match of pre-season against Lincoln City, the skipper broke a bone in his toe.I asked him how he was getting on.

Q. Andy, what's the situation now?

A. I'm about two weeks' off fitness. The game a week before we start (9th August v Ilkeston) is my goal. That would be ideal if I could get some minutes in and hopefully be in contention for the start of the season.

Q What sort of training have you been able to do?

A. Up until now, nothing at all. I've been resting. It's getting to the point now though where it's getting strong enough to jog and do straight line running.

It's going to be another week before I train with the lads and that should give me enough confidence to play against Ilkeston.

Q What's it like watching from the touchline?

A. Watching the games is very frustrating. You just want to be out there.

It's an important time of the year.I know we're not playing for points but you want to get your eye in and get fit for the start of the season so you are not playing catch-up.

Q. What do you think of the new system the Gaffer has introduced?

A. The new style of play is perfect for most of the lads. They prefer to play that way. Last year we tried to play a particular way by going direct and it didn't really come off.

Hopefully playing this way we can improve and finish a lot higher in the table.

Q. What targets have you set this season?

A. As players we want to aim for the play-offs. At the start of each season, no matter which team you are in, you want to go for promotion.
If we can be in the top ten by Christmas that will show the progress we have made since last year.

Q What leadership skills do you need as skipper of the team?

A. You have to be energetic, loud, get the basics right like arriving on time and make sure I do things right.

I try to set a good example and when I am on the pitch I try to do as much as I possibly can to help the team win. Hopefully my enthusiasm spreads.

Andy, thank you very much and get back soon.

Peter
