After the second null and void season in Wilkinson's return to Lincoln United Football Club, we caught up with the men's first team gaffer to hear his thoughts.

"It’s very disappointing that the season has been null and voided; however, after last season’s decision to null and void with significantly more games played, this was the only decision I expected to happen.

"This season felt special, a new start for everyone on and off the field with a number of changes to both. It's disappointing as pre-season was fresh, the young players were a breath of fresh air; their willingness to listen, learn and try to improve every week, along with the high expected standards of the experienced players, it makes the decision hard to agree with. Personally, I’d of liked to try to finish off what we started, whether that means playing throughout the summer or continuing the season when we would normally start the new one".

It's noteworthy that Wilkinson was only in charge for one match during the 2019-20 which saw 'The Whites' languishing third bottom in the table. Wilkinson's only match in charge was at home against table toppers and extremely 'unfortunate', Leek Town FC, the score that day finished 2-0 to the visitors - no disgrace by any means.

As referred to by Wilkinson, there were a lot of changes at the club during the spring and summer months of 2020; coinciding with the way in which the team had competed within the Northern Premier League, the gaffer talks about external expectations and predictions, or lack of...

"We went from relegation favourites to being just outside the play-offs: scoring lots of goals, playing some attractive football whilst also keeping clean sheets. Of course, we always knew things would get harder and we will never know if we could've sustained those performance levels or the consistency throughout the season, but to not have that chance, never knowing how the season would have panned out is the hardest thing to take.

Ultimately though, I think it’s time for life to try and get back to normal, and for us not to look back at what could have been but to be positive and look forward to what we as a club can achieve".

Should there be an option to get our men's first team back on the pitch in some capacity before the 'normal' summer break, we will ensure to communicate any developments as soon as possible.
