Lincoln United WFC will face off with local rival Lincoln City WFC in the quarter final of the County Cup.

The game, which many expect could decide who wins the trophy, is a big fixture for both sides as it is likely the winner could go on to lift the trophy at the end.

Lincoln City WFC sit second in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands, with two games in hand to first place. They are one tier ahead of ‘The Whites’, meaning that United will likely be seen by most as underdogs in this game.

Manager Chris Funnell said: “Naturally we are the underdogs, they’re second in the league above and a really good team. We’ll go out and do our best to put in a good performance.

“They’ve been on a really good run – playing Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup. They beat Northampton who are top of our league. Absolutely we are the underdogs and rightly so. They’ve got good players and management so we’re going to go out and give it our best shot.”

‘The Whites’ are coming off a 4 - 0 victory against promotion rivals Chesterfield WFC, in a game that saw United put forth one of their performances of the season in the second half.

The win was the biggest example of Lincoln United’s growth since the 2 – 1 loss to Chesterfield earlier in the season. They hope to continue this form that has seen them win all but one of their games since the mid-September loss.

“It’s the two highest ranked teams in the county. One of them is attached to the professional club in the city. It’s a great occasion. I really hope it’s well-attended and well-supported because regardless of the score or stage of the competition, it’ll be a great occasion and it’ll be great to see people there to support both teams.”

‘The Whites’ will soon find out if fullback Frankie Wilson will be available for selection.

The game will be played at Ashby Avenue, this Sunday 16th January, 2pm KO.
