Lincoln United Women’s hosted Lincoln City Women’s in the County Cup in front of a record breaking 292 supporters who travelled to Ashby Avenue to witness an excellent showcase of women’s football in Lincolnshire.

United were keen to get a quick start and to show their quality from the first whistle. ‘The Whites’ were sharp out of the blocks and threatened the city goal after just one minute when pressure from the attacking duo of Abbie Murrell and Lucy Farrow forced a corner kick.
Olivia Smith whipped in a delightful corner which Murrell headed into the top corner to claim a rare headed goal which put Lincoln United in the lead after just two minutes of play.

After the opening goal, United continued to dominate play with a flurry of chances coming from Chris Funnell’s side, the closest coming from Smith, who fired a curling attempt from outside of the box which narrowly missed the target.

A game-changing incident happened in the eighth minute when a brave Chloe Brock-Taylor went in for a well-timed tackle in the middle of the pitch, which resulted in a late and dangerously high challenge from a Lincoln City player. This ended the defenders' game early as Abi Ringrose was substituted onto the field to replace a seriously injured Brock-Taylor. Fortunately for the Lincoln City player, she escaped without any disciplinary action.

As a result of the long stoppage of play due to the injury, ‘The Imps’ picked up some momentum and began to get a foothold in the game for the first time after 15 minutes of play.

After winning herself a foul on the edge of the box, Jess Rousseau stepped up to take a powerful free-kick toward the goal, but she was denied by the fingertips of Amy Hood, who tipped the ball onto the crossbar before saving Toni McHamilton shot on the rebound.

Five minutes later, Rousseau found herself through on goal but this time she was not to be denied as the attacker took the ball around Hood before slotting into an empty net to equalise for the visitors.

The remainder of the half saw an end-to-end which provided great entertainment for both sets of supporters in the ground. Lauren Churcher came close to regaining the lead for United on two occasions inside the box but the City goalkeeper Amy Halloran was alert to deny the midfielder.

In a similar fashion to the first half, Lincoln United started the second half with intent. Murrell played a brilliant through ball to Farrow who struck a half-volley agonisingly wide of the post.

Murrell raced through on goal again in the 50th minute however the City centre-back, Tilly Fantom matched her for pace and pulled off a last ditch slide tackle to deny the attacker of a certain goal. Fantom had an incredible game which made it difficult for the United’s attackers to create clear cut chances in the second half.

Lee Mitchell’s side took the lead for the first time in the game after a well worked goal by ‘The Imps’ was slotted away by Melissa East.

Although Lincoln City took the lead, ‘The Whites’ were still in the game. Another brilliant corner from Smith nearly led to another assist for the defender but the header by Demi Barai was denied by the crossbar just after the hour mark.

‘The Imps’ doubled their lead in the 75th minute when McHamilton took advantage of a defensive mix-up and poked the ball into an empty net, wrapping the game up for the visitors.

Just before the final whistle, Murrell was fouled inside the box which led to an opportunity for United to claim a consolation goal. Churcher stepped up but fired over, which ended up being the last kick of the game.

In what was a brilliant showcase of Women’s football in Lincolnshire, Lincoln United lost their first game at Ashby Avenue against a strong Lincoln City side who were clinical and solid in defence which sees them qualify for the semi-final of the County Cup.

‘The Whites’ return to league action when they travel to Leicester City LFC on Sunday, 23rd January, 14:00 KO.
