Lincoln United WFC will host the unbeaten league leaders Northampton Town WFC in what possibly could be seen as ‘The Whites’ most important game of the season so far.
Northampton sit at the top of the table, winning all of their seven games and conceding just four goals in those games. On the other hand, ‘The Whites’ are home to the best attack in the league, scoring 47 through their six games.
A win over the weekend would put United three points behind Northampton, with a game in hand to the league leaders – making this game even more important.
‘Whites’ manager Chris Funnell said: “No matter what the game is, I’ll always back my team to create chances and to be in a position to score goals.
“To concede four in seven, fantastic. To win seven out of seven, fantastic. We created a boatload of chances against Lincoln City, granted they didn’t go in on the day.”
Northampton hold a comfortable position at the top of the table, mainly due to what seems to be their inability to drop points. Due to this, the stakes for the teams are different heading into this game.
“It might not feel season defining for them, it’s season defining for us. If we lose, we are nine points behind with a game in hand.
We play 18 games in the league; the likelihood is you’re not going to drop enough points when you’ve gone nearly half the season unbeaten. It’s a huge game for us and we need to be at it.”
‘The Whites’ announced the signing of former Peterborough centre-back Hollie Lewis, who won’t be available for selection over the weekend.
“Everything about her. She’s tall, good stature, physically capable, technically capable. Ultimately, we’re delighted to bring someone of her quality in and continue to add quality and depth to the squad.”
United will also be without striker Tracey Duxbury-Mead, who is in the process of recovering from a knee injury.
Lincoln United will take on Northampton this coming Sunday 30th January, 2pm KO at Ashby Avenue.
