Lincoln United WFC are set to continue their defence of the League Cup when they travel to Northampton WFC in the semi-final of the competition.

The two sides met at Ashby Avenue in the league on the 30th January where ‘The Cobblers’ edged a 1-0 win thanks to a Leah Cudone wondergoal in a fiercely competitive match.

‘The Whites’ have had a dominant run in the competition so far, scoring 24 goals and conceding just once in three games.
Josh Oldfield and Lou Barry’s side have also had an impressive run in the competition. They have scored 16 goals and are yet to concede in the tournament.

In the league fixture, Northampton were the first side to prevent Lincoln United from scoring in all competitions this season. Manager Chris Funnell believes that his side will return to scoring ways on Sunday. He said: “I have all faith in my attacking players that we can hopefully get a goal on Sunday.

“We’ve scored eight goals in the last two games… and as long as we are better on the football than when we last played them, I have no doubt that we’ll create good opportunities to score goals.”

With a place in the final at stake, Funnell believes that his side will need to be at their best to make it through to the next round. He said: “We’ll do everything we can do to try and get into a cup final again and hopefully win the league cup that we won last season, that’s our ultimate aim.”

There are no new injury concerns however Tracey Duxbury-Mead is still nursing a long-term knee injury and will be absent from this game.

The semi-final fixture kicks off at 2pm this Sunday at Rugby Borough Sports Trust.
