LINDLEY Swifts have been promoted!

Player-coach Kevin Bower celebrated his last game in charge by guiding Swifts to a magnificent 48-6 Pennine League Second Division home triumph over Boothtown Terriers.

It was a classic winner-takes-all tussle, with the victors joining champions Illingworth in Division I next season.

And a Lindley success was never in doubt as they dominated the Terriers from start to finish to make it 13 League and Cup triumphs on the trot – much to the delight of the departing Bower.

“What the boys have achieved has been absolutely magnificent,” he said.

“We finished the season really strongly to win our last 13 League and Cup games to get ourselves into what seemed an impossible position two months ago.

“The boys have been playing two games a week for the last five weeks, which made the challenge even harder, but they couldn’t have risen to that challenge any better.

“It’s a shame I won’t be able to carry on with the side in Division I next season, but it's become awkward with the shifts I work. At least I can now look forward to watching my lad play!

“The club are still in the process of looking for someone to take over from me, and I know whoever gets the role will thoroughly enjoy it.

“The people who run Swifts are absolutely fantastic, and I can’t thank captain Sam McCluskey, all the players, committee and John Beckett (co-coach) enough for their support over the past three years.”

Lindley’s promotion was one of the final issues to be settled in the Pennine League this season, with the majority of Huddersfield’s sides finishing in mid-table positions.

The other notable exception was St Joseph’s, who finished second bottom of the Championship Division and are expected to be relegated to Division I.
