Lions take the points in local derby

On Saturday Liskeard welcomed Bodmin to a wet dreary Lux Park for the latest match in the Counties 2 Tribute Cornwall, a fixture that is always keenly contested and often a close encounter, and the Lions managed to select a full squad, for the first time in a while.
Liskeard started well and in the opening minutes a clearance kick from the Bodmin defence was gathered by Lions wing Alex Kendall, who initiated the attack and despite a wet ball great passing found Lions right wing Sean Simmons who went over, in the corner, for the opening try, unfortunately the conversion attempt by Mike McCarthy was sent wide, a great start to the game. In the tenth minute fly-half McCarthy saw open space out on the right and put in a cross kick that was chased down by fullback Kieran Underhill who dotted down for a try, again the conversion attempt went wide. The Bodmin side were working hard trying to get attacks going but the rampant Lions back row of Adam Powell, Adam Dack and Will Hoskin snuffed out everything that came their way and Bodmin never really looked like scoring. On the half hour McCarthy put in another attacking cross kick this was chased down by hooker Archie Doidge and he dotted down for the third try, this was also wide out on the right and the conversion attempt hit the crossbar and bounced out, this was to the final scoring of the first half.
A very good half of rugby for the Lions and probably the best first half seen for the home club all season.
Into the second half it was more of the same from Liskeard with good work by the Liskeard pack as they chased down the bonus point try and in the fiftieth minute Doidge did go over the whitewash for a try, but the referee deemed that the final pass had gone forward denied the try and pulled play back for the penalty. The weather at this time was getting worse and the pitch was becoming sodden, and the referee called the two captains together in the sixty-third minute and informed them that, in his opinion, it was getting dangerous and blew the whistle to end the game, as it had passed the hour mark the score stands at 15-0 and a very good, much needed, win for Liskeard.
View from the touchline a good performance by the Lions, especially the first half hour of the game, with good handling all round despite the conditions and in many respects a typical derby match.
The next game should have been a Cornwall clubs cup match at Illogan, but as they are involved in a rearranged league fixture the cup game has been postponed until March 9th, therefore the next fixture will be on March 2nd away at second place Saltash with a kick off time of 1430 presumably.
