The Lions return to winning ways

For their home match last Saturday Liskeard welcomed bottom club Hayle to Lux Park for the sixth round of matches in the Cornwall-Devon and with several players unavailable changes had to be made to the squad and saw the return from injury of scrumhalf James Noel-Johnson (with Ieuan Evans switching to the centre) and Mark Goldsmith coming onto the bench.
Liskeard started well and within five minutes were awarded a penalty, midway between the Hayle ten metre line and their twenty-two, and a kick at goal was decided and up stepped centre Nick Parker who slotted the kick to open the scoring. In the twelfth minute Liskeard were awarded a second penalty, this was a little further out, but Parker’s attempt at goal was successful to increase the lead. On thirty-five minutes Yestin Hutchings picked up at the base of a scrum and went to the blindside and offloaded to Noel-Johnson who min turn sent a pass to wing Billy Edwards, who race in for a try from the visitors ten metre line and this was converted by the trusty boot of Parker. In stoppage time a well worked move off a line-out, inside the Hayle twenty-two, brought about a try for Evans after he spun out of a tackle and this was also converted by Parker to take the score to 20-0 at the whistle.
In the fifth minute of the second half, when Hayle were on the attack inside the home half, a pass was intercepted by Noel-Johnson and he raced through from sixty metres for an unconverted try. Back came Halye but excellent Lions defence kept them out and then with about ten minutes left on the clock Hayle scored a deserved unconverted try. In the seventy-fifth minute during another incursion by the visitors into home territory Lions fly-half Oliver Aggiss picked up ma loose ball saw a gap and went for it to race half the length of the field for a try that was converted by Parker to make the final score 32-5 and a much need return to winning ways. This coming Saturday Liskeard have a rest from league duty as it’s Cornwall knock out cup weekend and they play host to Truro, who play their league rugby one level higher in the Western Counties (West) The Liskeard 2nd XV were also in action at the weekend travelling to Plymouth to play the Peninsular Medical School and suffered their first defeat by a good young side losing 55-17.
