Llandrindod 3 v 1 Presteigne St Andrews
Llandrindod welcomed last season’s Radnorshire Cup Winners, Presteigne St Andrews to the Broadway for this quarter final game which unusually for the Radnorshire Cup was being played midweek under the floodlights.
Despite being from the league above, Llandrindod will have been reasonably confident going into the game having defeated Newbridge-on-Wye in the previous round and also the visitors during pre-season. With Adam Wright unavailable, Dan Davies donned the keeper’s gloves for his first game of the season.
Whilst the pitch was not conducive to passing football, Llandrindod adapted better to the wet and sticky conditions with Daniel Thomas and Robbie Nicholls representing our main threats. The first goal arrived after a good break down the right hand side of the pitch. Huey Lewis played in Robbie Nicholls who fired a low cross which made its way amongst a host of players to the back post and Daniel Thomas fired in.
Youngster Daryl Nicholls then scored Llandrindod’s second after picking up a loose ball on the edge of the box, Nicholls made a surging run and dispatched a low left foot shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net giving the visiting keeper no chance.
Presteigne then had their best spell of the game as their young attackers started to cause the home defence problems with their movement. After some good work by Presteigne captain, Joel Layton on the left hand side, Jack Bowen delivered a pin point cross which striker, Callum Matthews heading expertly into the net.
The visitors were now very much in the game and started to press for an equaliser. However they were caught with a “sucker punch” as right back, Huey Lewis broke from a Presteigne corner and played in Chris Davies. Big Dog held the ball up well as Lewis continued his venture into the Presteigne half, the ball was played back into the rampaging right back’s path and he fired a first time shot (which took a slight deflection) to leave the Presteigne Keeper stranded and leave the score 3-1 at half time.
Llandrindod played a much more compact game during the second half reducing the visitors to a number of half chances but at the same time looking threatening on the break. Presteigne’s miserable night was compounded by the sending off of substitute, Bobby Bird in the later stages. All in all a very good night for Llandrindod and a very testing semi-final away to Cymru Alliance side Rhayader now awaits us.
