On Friday 10th October they play the Swansea Gladiators at Gorseinon RFC. A replica of their 1st ever fixture in the 1995 season.
Back in 1995 two members of the Swansea Gladiators, Paul Rowley and Stuart Jones were working at Heol Goffa SAC. A day centre in Llanelli for people with learning difficulties. They regaled the staff and clients at Heol Goffa with tales of their adventures with the Gladiators and challenged the centre to raise a team.
Centre Manager Andrew Murray was brave enough to agree to the proposal and, although more at home on a cricket pitch, signed up to play full back. Recruitment fell to Gary James who effectively asked every able-bodied male, staff and client, plus their friends and family if they would get involved. Add in a few Burry Port connections and a full squad was assembled.
Burry Port also kindly agreed to lend kit for the fixture. Gary turned up at the laundrette to collect the kit and also there was the brand new 1st team kit. Gary couldn’t resist, and the Warriors ended up wearing the new kit before Burry Port had had a chance to turn out in it.
The day itself saw heavy rain at Gorseinion RFC’s Welfare field. Legend has it that the Mother of one of the players (Gabby McMullan) ran on with a coat for him during the game.
The game was filmed by a local company, from the back of their van at one end of the field, but all copies seem to have been lost.
The result was a drawn match - 26 all. The Warriors version is that they felt they had scored more points, but were persuaded to call it a draw – the beginnings of a fierce rivalry with plenty more controversy to come over the years.
This will be the 1st time the Warriors have returned to Gorseinon since that day. 30 years later no players are still involved but Stuart Jones and John Horwood who faced each other that day are both still present in the hierarchy of their respective clubs.
The Oldest mixed ability fixture in the world goes back to the beginning.
