The long road to Cardiff proved fruitless for the Warriors as they came up short in their 1st meeting with the Canton Club.
The Warriors took a somewhat depleted squad to the Capital, with various commitments and injuries taking their toll. Darren Pollitt made a rare appearance at flanker whilst Jason Jenkins made a comeback at hooker.
The home team had a larger squad to select from but mixed up the side with youth and veterans having a run in the 1st XV.
The Warriors seemed to “still be on the bus” in the early exchanges. The team struggled to settle down and Canton took full advantage getting of the mark with two scorching tries. Ricardo Intrigha finished off a sweeping move and Anthony Moreland soon followed in an opening blitz. The Warriors were also indebted to debutant martin Jones who managed two crucial tackles.
Once the Warriors settled they were able to make things harder for the home team but still rarely threatened themselves. Captain Davies secured plenty of ball from line outs but despite impressive centre Le Rowlands, their best attack was through the astute boot of scrum half Gwilym Lewis. They got some rewards through a Steve Rees penalty.
Canton continued to dominate and Ashley Jones was next to cross ensuring a healthy lead at the break.
With such a healthy lead Canton chose to experiment somewhat after the break and this coupled with the Warriors having a chance to regroup, saw the Llanelli team get back into the game.
The lack of ball carriers meant the Warriors had to throw everything wide, even before they had earnt the right. They weaved some intricate patterns but without tying up forwards they found it difficult to make a gap. Not that the pack lacked effort, Colin Talcon looked sharp and Nathan Lawson got through a huge amount of work.
Captain Davies borrowed over for a try and fly half Jamie Evans squeaked over in something of a come back third quarter, although Ryan Rees crossed at the other end. For Llanelli with Ben Winstanley stepping well in mid field and Jefferys coming into the line effectively, eventually room was found for both wings, Dylan Harris clinically finishing an overlap and Man Of The Match Simon Day getting a good score.
Canton made sure the Warriors had no thoughts of sneaking the match with a strong finish that saw Paul Hurrel cross from deep and a first try for Keiran Edey whose conversion was the last score of an entertaining game well controlled by referee Hawkins.
The Warriors will be making the shorter trip to Cefneithin this weekend when they hope to call on a full squad to get them back to winning ways.
