Two late goals decisive

"Our re-arranged league fixture saw us make the short trip to take on Russell Cadwallader's talented Welshpool Town on the Maes Y Dre ground. We were without our captain Ben White, Keiran Evans, Chris Aitkin, Tom Bailey and Gary Meredith who were all unavailable with Tom Evans sustaining an injury at work and Dan Kelly who was completing his 3 match ban. However we were able to call up Joe Makinson, Mike Roberts, Carwyn Johnson, Ryan Broadbent and Dale Evans from the reserves. We started on the front foot, creating some good openings and it was of no surprise when Iwan Matthews created space for himself to spin around to hit a great strike beyond the right hand of the diving home keeper to put us 1 up. The home side were finding it difficult to create any rhythm to their play - but we all knew that they certainly had the ability and we had to be on our toes to keep them out. We kept the pressure up and when Mike Roberts collected the ball out on the right, he produced a great bit of skill to skip past his marker, lift the ball up to hit an unstoppable volley into the far corner of our hosts net - 2 up. Towards the end of the first half further chances were created and it took a great save from the home keeper to deny Endaf Owens' drive to find the net. Our lads gave a very satisfying first half performance. The changing room was in a positive mood - but we all knew that our job was only half done - a 2 nil scoreline is difficult to defend and Cadwalladers side had more to offer. Our lads had to maintain their first half efforts. With the second half underway, the expected pressure from the home side did not materialise, we infact had further chances to add a third that would surely have put this game to bed. but on 55 minutes the warning signs were there for all to see as Will Thomas raced through to put the ball into our net only for it to be, harshly, flagged off side. Tired legs were now creeping into our game and on the hour mark, the excellent Ian Probert broke free from our midfield, finding a gap in the defence to slot the ball home - 1-2. But to be fair to our lads, they responded well and again pushed forward where we did create a couple of good openings to nick that third goal that would have seen us home. However on around the 90minute mark, Thomas again found space beyond our defence to push the ball past the diving Connor Lee's right hand and into the net off the post - we were waiting for the whistle but the off-side flag did not go up. The home side were now buoyant. A minute later again the same forward got through into our penalty area where he was brought down for a penalty by our exposed keeper - Probert made no mistake from the spot, giving them the 3 points. This was a very hard defeat to take - our performance from the lads was good and they didn't deserve to go home empty handed. We can look at numerous factors - was it our fitness levels, possibly; was a lapse in concentration towards the end of the game, definitely; officials not making the right calls late on? But to the lads credit, they gave their all - in football we don't always get what we believe that is deserved but over the season it levels out.
