Newton Stewart F.C. 4 v 1 Lochar Thistle F.C
Today we welcomed Lochar Thistle to Blairmount in the South League and the home side got off to an electrifying start when after only 3 minutes Marc Whyte played a defence splitting pass through to top scorer Robert Middleton and the big striker unleashed an unstoppable first time effort to blast the home side in to the lead. The visitors stunned by this early set back regrouped and pushed forward and within ten minutes an excellent shot across goal was superbly palmed to safety by Euan Drysdale in the home goals. Two minutes later the visitors again came close when a corner from the right across the area was met first time and the effort whizzed over the bar. On the quarter hour mark captain Rory Drysdale surged forward , slipped a fine pass into the path of midfielder Robbie Thomson who’s effort was comfortably saved by the Lochar keeper. With the half hour approaching a flowing move down the right found Ross Landers and he brilliantly turned his man before slipping a great through ball into the path of the on coming Rory Drysdale who’s first time effort was superbly parried by the goalie. Minutes later a quick short corner by Robert Hughan was played back to him and his pin point cross caused the defence all sorts of problems before Robbie Thomson side footed home from six yards to double the home sides advantage. The Creesiders at this point were in full full flow and five minutes from the interval some superb intricate one touch play between Callum Scott and Ross Landers found the latter playing a teasing ball into the area and midfielder Robert Hughan was unlucky to see his curling effort just sneak over the cross bar.
The second half was barely three minutes old when a through ball found Robbie Thomson controlling the ball on the edge of the area before being upended and the Ref immediately pointed to the spot ! The midfielder dusted himself down and dispatched the penalty to put the home side into total control. Almost on the hour mark an attacking move found Robert Middleton and the striker tried to place his shot which was excellently pushed away by Dode Martin who was having a tremendous game in the Lochar goals. With 15 to go the Creesiders were awarded a free kick 22 yards out and up stepped the excellent Robert Hughan who curled a simply sublime effort over the wall and into the top corner to grab the home sides fourth of the day. Within two minutes Newton almost went further ahead when assistant Manager Darren Johnstone , on as a sub curled and unbelievable effort goalwards which produced a quite incredible finger tipped save from Dode Martin to deny the veteran striker. As the clock ticked down Robbie Thomson produced a pin point pass to send Arran Thomson clear and the youngster rifled his effort across the face of the goal only to see his shot shave the back post. As the game entered added on time Newton continued to push and a superb control and first time volley from Marc Whyte cannoned off the bar to safety. Lochar were finally rewarded for all their hard work and endeavours when two minutes into added time they broke clear and a great strike gave them the consolation goal their overall play so richly deserved.
We’d like to thank Lochar Thistle for an absolutely tremendous match and we look forward to heading to the North West Campus for the return fixture next weekend.
