Lochar hold the derby bragging rights off Dumfries tonight after a fine deserved 3-1 victory over rivals Heston Rovers. The only change from last week saw Ben Jaekel replace Dev Nicholson with Greig Goodwin moving into the engine room.
The game started slowly with both teams looking nervous and neither really taking control of the game with both teams adopting the long ball tactic. One of Lochar’s long balls found Brodie Turner who looked well onside but was surprisingly flagged offside by the assistant referee which caused an uproar from the Thistle bench which eventually resulted in the experienced Steven Woodward being shown a bizarre red card. The 1st half petered out with neither side creating many chances and not threatening the keepers.
The 2nd half started quite similar to the 1st but it seemed Lochar who were showing a little bit more urgency. This was soon to pay off as they took the lead on 53 minutes when a crossfield switch of play put the impressive Turner through on goal and he cooly fired past the oncoming Heston keeper to give Thistle the lead and notch his third goal in a Thistle strip. The next 15 minutes were again very even with both teams struggling to create much in the final third. The game was to turn on the 70th minute when a long ball from Scott Wilby put Alex Maxwell through on goal and before he the striker could pull the trigger he was hauled to the ground and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, up stepped substitute Devan Nicholson and the young midfielder made no mistake sending the Heston keeper the wrong way to double the scoreline at 2-0. Lochar introduced Joe McMillan on the 75 minutes and the speedy forward was quick to get involved in the game when he collected the ball wide and cut inside going by 3 players to play Goodwin through on goal and the effective midfielder calmly slid the ball under the goalkeeper to make it 3 nil to Lochar in which was the best move of that match. Heston did get a late consolation from the spot after Sandy Kennedy was penalized for a foul in the box. Lochar ran out 3-1 winners in the end in what was a well-needed win and hopefully can kick start the season. Great win.
Mon Thistle.
