S1/2 Team Win Trophy at Hamilton!

Sunday had Loch Lomond travelling to Hamilton for the first time to take part in Hamilton Bulls RFC annual tournament playing against 4 other teams.

Loch Lomond’s first game was against Whitecraigs. Loch Lomond took the kick off to start the game, with the ball going deep into Whitecraigs half. The ball was caught cleanly, and Whitecraigs pressed forward, only to be stopped by Lomond’s strong defending. Following a crunching tackle, Josh picked up the loose ball, and surged forward, managing to get round the last defender to run in Lomond’s first try of the game. Lomond missed the kick to take the lead, 5 – 0.

Straight from the kick off, Whitecraigs pressed Lomond’s defence, but the boys held firm. Craig brought the ball out from defence, and passed to Minimunn at the half way line who was able to get passed the defensive line to run in under the posts for Lomond’s second try. The kick was converted to make the score 12-0.

Lomond soon scored their third try, in a similar fashion as the previous one. Craig linked up with Minimunn at the halfway line. Minimunn moved forward and fed the ball out wide to Donald to run the ball in for another try. From a difficult angle, Minimunn was unlucky to miss the conversion to make the score 17-0.

Lomond scored a further 2 quick try’s. Minimunn intercepted a pass at Whitecraig’s 22 yard line to run in Lomond’s fourth try, with Aidan converting the kick. Patrick finished the scoring after receiving the ball from Aidan, Patrick outpaced the trailing defenders to run in Lomond’s fifth try. The conversion was made, finishing the game 31- 0.

The second game had Loch Lomond up against the hosts, Hamilton Bulls RFC. Hamilton started the game, and pushed forward, putting Lomond under pressure. Most of the early play was in Lomond’s half, but Lomond’s defence held up to numerous phases of attack. Following one attack, Lomond manged to win the ball, Minimunn broke forward, managing to slip past Hamilton’s defenders to run in the opening try. Minimunn converted the try to make the score 7-0 to Lomond.

Straight from the kick off, Hamilton pressed Lomond back into their half. Hamilton won the ball back, and following quick passing on Lomond’s 5 yard line, Hamilton ran in under the posts for their opening try. Hamilton scored their conversion to make the score 7-7 each.

From the kick off, Will showed some strong running to carry the ball through a ruck of players, only to be stopped by Hamilton’s defensive line. Lomond won the ball straight back, and Minimunn ran in for another impressive try. Lomond missed the kick to move the score to 12 -7.

The game was very even, with both teams cancelling each other out. Hamilton created an opening by quickly moving the ball out wide to run in for a try. Hamilton missed the kick to equalise the score, 12-12.

Straight from the kick off, Calum caught the ball, and drove forward to Hamilton’s 22 yard line and off loaded the ball to Craig, who then side stepped his defender to run in a great try. Lomond converted the kick to make the score 19-12.

As the game came to the closing stages, Lomond started playing fine flowing rugby, passing and moving well, to create the space for Patrick to score Lomond’s fourth try to finish the game 24-12.

Lomond’s third game was against Kilmarnock RFC, with Kilmarnock taking the kick off. The game started at a great rate of knots, with each team trying to run and pass the ball. Kilmarnock soon opened the scoring by moving the ball out wide and running in for a try at the corner. Kilmarnock missed the kick to make the score 0-5.

Kilmarnock soon ran in their second try, with the ball being moved out wide for the attacking player to outpace Lomond’s defence to score. Kilmarnock missed the kick to go 0-10 in the lead.

Despite the score, the game was even with most of the play being played in the middle of the park. From a knock on by Kilmarnock, Minimunn took a quick free kick off which caught Kilmarnock unaware. He managed to get to the opposition’s 22 yard line before passing to Craig, who then moved the ball to the supporting Donald to run in Lomond’s first try. Lomond manged to make the conversion to make the score 7-10.

Lomond seem to take confidence from scoring, and pressed forward. Patrick picked the ball up from the kick off, and pushed forward. He got past a number of defenders, only to be stopped before Kilmarnock’s try line. Lomond continue to press, and were finally awarded by Calum picking the ball up, and forcing the ball over the line for a Lomond try. Despite missing the conversion, this exciting game finished 12-10 to Lomond.

Going into the last game, Loch Lomond needed to win against West of Scotland to win the tournament. West of Scotland took the kick off to the game started. Patrick pick up the ball from the kick off, and almost scored before being stopped at the West of Scotlands try line. This gave Lomond confidence, and they managed to turn the ball round at the scrum at West’s 5 yard line. Aidan quickly moved the ball out to Minimunn, and he burst forward, breaking through several tackles to score a try. The kick was converted to make the score 7-0.

Lomond were soon attaching again with Minimunn driving forward. He managed to pass the ball out wide to Luke who managed to evade the last defender to score Lomond’s second try. From a difficult angle, Lomond scored the conversion by a great kick by Minimunn to make the score 14-0.

A rampant Lomond immediately scored their third try straight from the kick-off. Calum collected the ball from the kick, and charged forward through the heart of West of Scotland’s defence, and driving the ball up to West’s 22 yard line. Calum moved the ball to Luke, and then to Jay who were supporting Calum, to run in another try to make the score 19-0.

Loch Lomond continued to play some fantastic rugby, moving and passing the ball freely with most of the play now being played in West of Scotland’s half. Craig was next to score for Lomond. The Lomond forwards managed to turn the ball round at the scrum. The ball was moved quickly out wide to Craig, but with still a lot to do, managed to drive over the line for a try to make the score 24-0.

The last action of the game had Lomond score a final try. From a West of Scotland attack, Lomond regained possession, and Josh broke free to out run the last defender to score. The kick was converted to make the score 31-0.

Loch Lomond received the winner’s trophy to be crowned S1/S2 Hamilton Tournament winners.
