The conditions were great, the pitch was excellent, the gathering crowd was getting fever pitched, the home side pumped up... but where were the Pumas!! Skipper JC was giving his "Churchillean" speach and also forgot about the 15 min walk to the pitch which delayed the start of the match much to the Refs annoyance. So on rolled the Pumas and we kicked straight off. The Pumas were so unprepared as we lost the first contact, lost the ball and lost the lead all inside 3 mins. 7-0.
But from the restart the Pumas showed up and for the next 25 mins the forwards really started to dominate the match with everyone hitting the rucks hard and driving Falwey back constantly. Being on the back foot forced Fawley into giving a penalty which Robbie Connell converted.
The backs also showed great hands at times with Lee Giles stepping in at fly-half. The ball spun out left through the centres with Gus Flack coming into the line to move ball inside the Fawley twenty-two. As the ball came back right across the line Kent Streek found himself in the right place to fall over and score a try. 7-8.
With 27 mins played Robbie Connell gets another penalty and the Pumas start to stretch away. From the restart the Pumas continued to push forward with Scrum-half Nick Destefano having a great match kicking the ball deep into the Fawley half time and time again. From a line out 5 m out the forwards gather and roll a maul forward but held up so work it back through the hands and Kent Streek picks up his second try of the day showing good power. Robbie converts. 7-18.
With JC showing good power and pace off one flank Sam Floyd also proved his equal by acellerating wuickly following a ruck and scoring as the Fawley defense was left shocked. Robbie converts bringing the score at HT 7-28 (think ref got it wrong and added in another penalty but we will take it!!).
Fawley start the second half well and get an early penalty with Pumas offside but then they give away the same offence with 46 mins played and Robbie agian converts. Fawley though showed signs of wanting to play and some good hands and poor Puma tackling brought them a try. 15-31
The best try of the day came from prop Steve White who powered over from 20 yards out. The scrum held firm in the center field and was moved forward by Lee Giles. JC then sprinted forward from the breakdown and found Prop Lee Smith (where did he come from) on his inside who fed onto Steve to drive over.
Into the last 10mins and Tom O'Grady gets a try out on the wing and a fine for loitering and Fawley get a lucky score under the posts as a clearence from Lee Giles catches the outstretched arm of a Fawley player and bounces kindly into his hands. But the Pumas continued to push forward and from the last play of the match a good heel by Paul Price brought the ball back to No8 Jonathon Elsmore who picks up and powers over with Robbie converting. 22-50 was the final score but the ref thought 22-54 so we went with him!!
A good team performance with all squad players putting in a good shift. JC lead the side well and was a driving force making some good gains. But for me Nick Destefano ran the game at scrum-half. His decision making throught the match was great allowing the whole team to play and keep the pressure on Fawley. It was great to see the bench being used with Alex Ainscough, Julian Beard and Robert Hylands (making his 1XV debut) all adding impact.
