EDS 5 - 1 WIMBLEDON 03/02

After a two week break for Raz to study for his right to be in our honourable company, Cock-eyes men pitched up at HOP to play Wimbledon 5s. Watto astutely (as he is a lawyer) pointed out the weather was better than the torrential rainstorm we played in earlier in the season, and we were eager to set the record straight after a less than impressive display away leg.

The game started brightly, Eds playing some nice patient passing hockey and making the less than mobile Wimbledon forward line work hard for a sniff of the ball. Despite the domination, and an early goal by Hugh, Eds struggled to turn the chances they had into goals and were unlucky to be only 1-0 at Half time. Hugh’s goal – from my very hazy memory of Saturday – was a scrappy finish in the D but just what was needed to settle nerves and allow Eds to keep control of the game.

Half-time was much better this week, Annakin providing the correct set of squashies, none of this sour s**t. A few words were shared around the group, and we were ready to continue the good play in the second half.

The impressive play continued, and despite the oppo being such athletic looking individuals, they began to tire and we took full advantage of this. Four quick goals in a 15 minute period from Raz, Biggsy, Annakin and Hugh made sure Eds were taking all 3 points this week. It was during this time that Greg won DOD. As the phrase goes, Age is just a number, and for once Greg wasn’t the youngest on the pitch. However, this proved to be his downfall. The player was highly skilful, fast and a shoe-in the be better than Ashley Jackson, but the little lads achievement this season will include beating and muscling Greg off the ball.

After this, Hopey - promoted to the 4s again – decided to miss the ball and let Wimbledon score with their only shot all day, but we will forgive him, he has been playing with Ashby all season...

A strong performance on the pitch and an equally strong performance in the clubhouse afterwards. The Eds are ever closer to confirming that top 3 place.
