A chilly penultimate game of the season against Great Brickhill saw a plucky display from Long Marston 1st XI, coming away with some well-earned bonus points that could go a long way to securing safety from relegation.
LM bowled first and with Brickhill’s attacking and deep batting lineup, they had the confidence to come hard at the new ball bowlers. Nevertheless, Basher took the less aggressive opener for just 5, chipped to Bee at extra cover. The attack continued, and the score was at 98 when the second wicket was taken, Laura Sandy getting the talented number 3 to edge onto his stumps. Needless to say when the score is 98-2 and the 2 outgoing batsmen have scored 5 and 17, the other opener is dangerous. Bee and Storey combined to get the number 4 stumped. But the run rate kept ticking along at close to 5 an over. Two quick wickets for the in-form Robinson to reduce the score to 166-5 (the opener dismissed for 100) and LM were in with a chance of getting on top.
This didn’t stop Brickhill however as the rate carried on going despite batsmen falling at regular intervals. All the bowlers performed well, Blake and Ed in particular, but with some below-par fielding and a bit of bad luck, Brickhill finished on 260 all out. To bowl out the best batting side in the league within 50 overs is a great achievement.
Tea was delicious – thank you to the Lawson-Blakes.
After some rain at tea, LM required 235 from 40 overs.
Some top-quality opening bowling saw the run rate stay below the level we needed, and the dismissals of Beesley and Lyons to make the score 18-2 left LM somewhat behind the 8 ball. Sim fell for 18 a little while later to leave EGC and Robinson to perform their weekly saviour act. The partnership was broken when Crawley was given out by a shocking decision. Unlucky chief. Ed fell shortly after and at this point the game was gone, so we focused on getting the most bonus points possible. Storey and Hammond put on a few, as did Bee when he came to the crease, and we made our way up to a respectable 168.
10 points against the top side in the league and I think LM should be proud of their effort. A huge game against Buckingham this Saturday as we battle to save our spot in division 1. Good luck to all those involved.
Thank you Tracy for scoring.
