Robbins: “It’s an honour for me”

Ryan Robbins said that he is “very proud” after the forward was recently appointed as Loughborough Dynamo’s new captain.

Robbins had a terrific 2018/19 season. He scored 21 league goals after joining Loughborough from Shepshed Dynamo last September.

The 31-year-old is “privileged” to become the new Club captain and he is looking forward to leading his side out next term.

“I am very proud,” he said. “Privileged to be the new captain. It’s an honour for me.”

“There is a lot of people that see this as a joke of an appointment. I’ve worked quite hard. I’ve matured quite a lot over the years and I’m looking forward to being the captain,” he added.

Robbins was named the Directors’ Player of the Season for a superb campaign and he believes that “it’s more of a bonus” to be handed the captaincy role.

The Leicester-born striker said: “It’s more of a bonus. To come away and be offered the club captaincy; it’s a bonus for me. Unexpected, but a bonus for me.

“It just shows that I have matured over the years. It just shows that the manager (Lee Attenborough), Brad [Munn] and the board have that faith in me to be an influence in the changing room on and off the pitch. So hopefully I can do that.”

Robbins is one of the most experienced players in the Dynamo dressing room, and he has suggested that his “knowhow” will help some of the younger members of the squad.

He said: “I’m a big character in the changing room. I like to get my points across. I like to encourage the younger players to show what they’ve got – to showcase what they’ve got.

“I always say that the pitch is a show window; you don’t know who’s watching. So hopefully my experience and my knowhow will help the younger lot as well as help the ones that are experienced as well like Fozzy (Luke Foster). I can learn off Fozzy as well as he can learn off me.

“It’s not just me that’s on the pitch. There’s 11, probably 16 captains out there. Everyone’s got a part to play.”

Dynamo ended last season in 8th position – their joint highest-ever finish at this level – and Robbins said that it would be nice if they could get into the play-offs this time around.

“After sitting down and speaking with Atts and Brad it’s clear what they want and we share the same views. It would be nice to get into the play-offs [and] push up the league.

“Like we were two or three spots off the play-offs. A couple of those games we conceded late goals in [if we could’ve] turned them into wins we are up there. It will be tough but we’ve got the players and we’ve got the squad to be up there and to be challenging.”

The forward also stated that his teammates have made it clear that they were happy with the appointment.

Robbins said: “After hearing the news that I would be club captain, the boys made it clear they were happy about the appointment. That made me feel I had a good bunch of lads behind me and I know they will help me just as much as I will help them.”
