We recently caught up with Charlie Young where he discusses two seasons at The Moes and personal performances his spell at the club

Loughborough Dynamo midfielder Charlie Young believes that he has improved as a player and is looking forward to continuing his development as he reflects on his time at the club.

The 22-year-old joined The Moes from Birstall United back in 2018 and played a key role in the club’s joint-highest finish that season, then helped the side to an 11th-place finish before the campaign was ended due to Covid-19.

Young looks back on an enjoyable two years at the ADT Stadium, and is hoping to carry that on moving into the forthcoming season, whenever that may be.

He said: “First and foremost it’s been a massive learning curve. Obviously the step up in standard is been massive and I feel like throughout the two years, I have developed as a player a lot and obviously being part of a team that has been quite successful.

“In terms of what we have achieved with league positions and stuff I think it has been a fantastic two years and I have absolutely enjoyed every minute of it.”

Young added: “I think lots of player will tell you when they look back on their previous years, they will tell you if I’d have known that when I was younger, and that the same as me really.

“I’ve learnt so much off coaches and other players as well, it’s only going to help me as a player, but I’ve still got a lot of learning to do and a long way to go so I’m excited to continue that development.”

After an excellent start to the season, which saw Young put in a Man of the Match performance against Chasetown, the defensive-minded midfielder was sent off during a 4-1 defeat to Lincoln United in October – a moment that he insists changed his campaign.

“To be honest, I think after the sending off something clicked with me,” he explained. “For a long time, the gaffer and Brad [Munn] had been onto me about being disciplined with my position. Obviously, my game is to press and chase after the ball but there’s a time and a place to do that.

“I think it wasn’t until I got the sending off – trying to win a ball back that realistically I wasn’t going to win that until then – I didn’t really understand what they were saying.

“I just wanted to go and win the ball back and chase after it at every opportunity. And it took that moment, the red card for me to realise what they were on about and see why it was important that I did what they were trying to get through to me.”
