Lurgan 1 Dungannon 0

Saturday 5th March 2016.
Premier League.
Lurgan found it tough going against a well organised Dungannon side at the Junior High School on Saturday. It could have been all so different if they had managed to convert a virtual tap-in in the second minute created by mid field star Sarah McClure but unfortunately the chance was missed and for the rest of the half their frustration continued. On the half hour mark Lurgan managed to fluff another penalty corner award and three minutes later a simple opportunity created by a lovely run by Carly Johnston was again squandered.
If Lurgan were to mount a serious challenge for the title this was a must win match and their pressure was eased considerably at the very start of the second half. Again it was Sarah McClure who produced the magic as she raced right through the Dungannon team right from the pass back. Just outside the Dungannon circle she linked up with Jo-Anne Wilson who popped a neat little pass to strike partner Emily McStea who calmly steered a lovely shot round the advancing Dungannon keeper and into the net. With Lurgan nerves somewhat settled they continued to dominate possession without creating too much. Several poor choices when it came to distribution and a tendency to hold on to the ball for too long when the simple pass was the better option didn’t help their cause. Lurgan are a much better side when they move the ball quickly and make intelligent runs. This just wasn’t happening and it resulted in a frustrating scrappy match. Again they had Suzie Taylor to thank for a stop from a 55th minute penalty corner which could have been disastrous. To end a frustrating day in front of goal Lurgan managed to squander two late penalty corner awards but they managed to hang on for a vital win. With three matches remaining Lurgan need 4 points to guarantee a title win but two of those are away teams who have already beaten them this season. A huge opportunity is there for them over the next three matches.
