Lurgan 4 North Down 0

Saturday 29th October 2016.
Premier League.
Lurgan 4 North Down 0.
After a three week break Lurgan got back to the serious action of Premier League competition at home to North Down on Saturday. After an even opening ten minutes Lurgan grew in confidence and began to dominate proceedings forcing North Down to defend deeper and deeper. They got their reward after 14 minutes when Carly Johnston fed a lovely ball through to Emma Lindsay and she confidently rounded the advancing keeper before firing in to the unguarded net. Lurgan thought they had increased their lead on 27 minutes when a Charlene Hull strike from a penalty corner found its way into the net off the keeper’s pads, but the umpires ruled it out and the score remained at one nil until the break.
The second half proved to be a period of almost one way traffic as Lurgan piled attack after attack on a struggling North Down defence. On 38 minutes Jo-Anne Wilson latched on to a loose ball in the North Down circle but her shot flew just wide of the post. Lurgans penalty corner conversion statistics haven’t been that high this season but Sarah McClure helped improve them somewhat in the 51st minute with a beautiful strike that thumped against the backboard beating the keeper all ends up. Lurgan penalty corner stats improved again in the 63rd minute when a Kerrie Burns dray flick at their next penalty corner was only half saved by the keeper and Emily McStea nipped in to fire the rebound home to put Lurgan 3 nil up. North Down were looking a shattered side and it looked like a case of damage limitation for them for the remaining few minutes. They were getting little sympathy from Lurgan who continued their relentless wave of attacks and they succumbed again in the 67th minute. A Charlene Hull strike from a penalty corner award was only half saved by the keeper and this time it was Lauren Wright who was on hand to pick up the rebound and plant the ball wide of the keeper to make it 4 nil for the home side.
After the match Zoe Hawthorne, one of Lurgans most experienced players, announced her retirement from Premier League hockey. Having given so much to her home town club and been such a part of their advancement through the years from Junior hockey to the very pinnacle of Ulster Hockey it was a fitting tribute to her that she was part of the Lurgan team that for the first time in their history won the Ulster Premier League title this year.
