Banbury 10s Festival

Alwyn Ogden

Another impressive Lutterworth girls squad battling performance

Our U16 Girls travelled to the Banbury 10s Festival along with the U18s and 14s, competing in a strong field of 18 teams from across the Midlands and the South. The teams were split into three leagues, with group winners progressing to the Cup competition and runners-up competing for the Plate.
The squad were very well supported throughout the day by family and friends, who created a fantastic atmosphere and provided constant encouragement. Lutterworth were
took a large squad, allowing for regular rotations in every game — with each change proving seamless and maintaining the team’s intensity and structure.
Lutterworth opened their campaign against Mansfield, a side that had beaten them 39–17 earlier in the season. This time, however, the game told a very different story. Despite some early nerves, Lutterworth showed real progress, pushing Mansfield all the way in a tight contest before narrowly losing 7–5 — a clear sign of how far the team has come.
Next up were Warriors, where Lutterworth found their rhythm, securing a confident 10–0 victory and registering their first win of the day.
With momentum building, Lutterworth faced Chesham in a crucial third match, with both teams level on points and score difference after two games. By now, Lutterworth were playing with far greater fluency, showing improved handling and strong running lines. This translated into a dominant performance, running in five unanswered tries in a convincing win.
The following match against Chinnor saw Lutterworth continue their strong form, scoring three tries. Chinnor managed just a single reply — the first try Lutterworth had conceded since the opening match — highlighting the team’s growing defensive strength.
The final group game against Trojans proved decisive, with both teams sitting joint second. In a tense and hard-fought encounter, each side crossed for a try, but Trojans’ successful conversion ultimately made the difference, leaving Lutterworth just short.
This result meant a third-place finish in the group, but the margins could hardly have been finer. Across five matches, Lutterworth conceded just three tries — a remarkable defensive effort that underlined their organisation, determination, and resilience throughout the day. In such a tightly contested pool,2 points ultimately proved the difference between second and third.
The quality of the group was evident in the outcomes, with Mansfield going on to finish runners-up in the Cup and Trojans runners-up in the Plate — further highlighting just how competitive every fixture had been.
Above all, huge congratulations go to the Lutterworth players, who showed outstanding commitment, battled for every point, and represented the club with real pride. Credit must also go to the coaches and the parents, whose dedication — travelling miles and giving up their time — continues to make opportunities like this possible.
