The euphoria following the 6-1 cup win against Newent in midweek was quickly forgotten when Lydney got back to the bread and butter of the league on Saturday. The 4-0 thumping at home to Brimscombe will become a familiar sight if Lydney can’t strengthen a very threadbare squad.
With Morley-Lyne pulling out in the warm up, Lydney lost central defender Sam Elliott on 15 minutes with a hamstring pull and his playing partner Tristan Murphy 2 minutes into the second half with a calf strain. A lack of communication led to Lewis Thompson, available after suspension, not even making the bench. With Logan Bowkett having moved on and Tom Wright not joining us in November, Lydney need some bodies.
As for the game, Brimscombe looked full of confidence and went in front on 6 minutes. Kyle Pitts scoring unchallenged from close in. The loss of Elliott soon after hindered Lydney and Jonty Welch added a second on 20 minutes heading past Thomas from 8 yards.
Referee Bounds was being influenced by the visitors constant shouts at every challenge and he brandished yellow cards to Sheen and Halford just before the break.
Lydney suffered another injury blow 2 minutes after the restart when Murphy left the field to be replaced by English. To rub salt into the open wounds Dylan Morgan swept home 3 minutes later to kill the game completely. With Brimscombe sitting comfortably Lydney finally found some life and won a succession of corners. Arran Price was very unlucky not to reduce the deficit when his header came back off the post. Liam Sheppard, who was looking Lydney’s main threat from midfield was surprisingly hooked on 65 minutes, Finnan Hamblett replacing him.
Having soaked up Lydney’s momentum the visitors bagged a 4th on 78 minutes when Morgan scored his second after the ball fell kindly for him in the box.
With no game in midweek Lydney need to dust themselves down ready to travel to Holmer Green next weekend. There are no easy games in this league and everyone needs to put a full shift in, especially when it’s not going your way.
