Good Start to the season.

Machynlleth travelled to Benllech with a squad of 16 players after a good pre season and a training session with 20 players for the first time in years, and welcoming back Thommy Thorndyke, Cai Lewis and Gwydion Davies after a few years since they last played. A real contrast to the same fixture last season where only 12 players managed to make the trip.
Benllech had a strong squad and would have been confident before the game, and they started strongly with a strong scrum putting the Machynlleth pack under pressure. The home side enjoyed good field position in the early part of the first half, but the Machynlleth backline looked threatening and it was them that profited from a turnover ball to run in a long distance try to score against the run of play.
The back continued to threaten and with the Mach pack also starting to come into their own a series of strong runs deep into the 22 resulted in another converted try for Machynlleth.
Machynlleth started to look stronger as the half wore on with the pack driving well from a series of line outs, one of which led to the third try of the game with a close range try near the posts, making it 0-21.
Benllech then enjoyed some good pressure as the game went towards half time, with a series of scrums putting the Mach tryline under considerable pressure, but some strong defence eventually resulting in a turnover led to Mach clearing their lines and going into half time with a good lead.
With Machynlleth playing downhill and with the wind at their backs, the home side started to tire which led to Mach scoring regularly through the second half, with some great tries coming after some great interplay between backs and forwards.
Full credit to Benllech who never gave up as the game wore on, and following some string pressure in the Mach 22, they were eventually rewarded with a consolation score when they powered over from close range.
Machynlleth continued to run the ball at every opportunity, and it was with the final play of the game that they scored again making the final score 7-68 to Machynlleth.
Machynlleth try scorers : Ifor Evans (2), Matt Thomas (2 tries, 8 Conversions), Ryan Blockley (2), Tomos Ifan (1), Gerwyn Coleman (1) and Gwydion Davies (1), Scott Lewis (1 conversion)
