at the England Hockey Tier II Western area finals

The team spirit and culture within the group is outstanding!
Adrian Evans, Head Coach

Our U14 Girls won the England Hockey Western area finals today, which MHC were proud to be hosting at Altwood.

In the first match against Richmond, the girls achieved an early lead and dominated the first half. In a tense second half both sides were evenly matched. Despite a last ditched attempt by Richmond they were able to hang for a one nil win.

In the second match v Reading, an even and challenging match ensued. Despite several chances in a very physical match, it ended in a nil nil draw.

So, to the final game v Oxford. As the tournament was a round robin Maidenhead needed 3 clear goals to draw the event and 4 to win. No pressure - score four or more goals and don’t concede!

The team talk was straight forward “focus on winning first and the goals will come.” Maidenhead dominated the early exchanges and went into half time one nil up. At half time captain Cate Cowper challenged the girls to be more accurate and deliver the extra goals they needed. Did they deliver…four second half goals in an outstanding performance. The five nil win meant the girls won on superior goal difference.

Head coach Adrian Evans was very pleased with the win and the girls’ overall display. He said: “I am very proud of the girls. The team spirit and culture within the group is outstanding – they play for each other. They have scored 115 goals this season and conceded just 29. They played some excellent hockey and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The maturity they display and way the conduct themselves is outstanding.”

Many thanks also to all the volunteers who assisted to make the Finals a great success.
