The FA Cup replay against Abbey Hey on Monday night, was abandoned after 105 minutes due to a Abbey Hey player's injury.
The game starts at a very quick pace as both teams know that a home tie against evo stik premier side Altrincham is at stake in the next round. Maine road are dealt with injury blows before the game starts as John Mason misses out from a subsequent injury he sustained in the original game and Louie Inniss is placed on the bench as cover if needed as he has injury also sustained in the previous game. A very frenetic cup tie but no chances for either team. The majority of the game is being battled for in midfield with the referee letting a few tackles go early on in the proceedings.
Matthew Morgan plays a good ball threaded through to rick Williams results in a good save by the keeper in 25th minute. The first real clear cut chance for both teams in the game.
30 mins tom keyworth is brought down on the edge of the box. Matthew Morgan takes the subsequent free kick that is palmed on the cross bar and out for a corner by the abbey hey goal keeper. The best chance of the game for Maine Road.
Shortly after in the 32nd minute joe o'brien picks up the ball on the left and plays a cute 1-2 with tom keyworth and put road in behind the abbey hey defence. Joe obrien then fires the ball across the box to Rick Williams who narrowly fires it over the bar. Rick Williams will be annoyed with himself as he knew how crucial and important that goal would be for Maine road.
38 min played and once again good play by Jack langford who passes it to morgy who shoots producing a good stop from keeper.
40 min james ormrod gives away a free kick just outside roads penalty area. The abbey number 8 strikes the ball well and produces a spectacular stop from Ryan livesy who has had little to do so far in the game. Both goal keepers having stay alert and be at there best. Maine road get away with a stroke of luck as not being punished from the resulting corner as abbey hey cannot keep the header down and it fires over the bar.
42 min abbey hey are beginning to get hold of the ball more in the last 5 minutes of the first half and once again Ryan livesy is called upon and makes another good save down to his left to keep the tie at 0-0 going into the break Half time
Both teams have had some chances in the latter stages of the with Maine road having the most of both teams but the main battle has been in midfield where Maine roads high pressing from Jamie roe and jack Langford has enabled road to force abbey hey to turnover the ball and create some chances in front of goal for Maine road
50 mins Maine road commit too many men forward and leave there selves short at the back as a long ball is failed to be dealt with by Ewan Rolfe and he is back pedalling to try and undo his mistake but subsequently brings down the number 9 for abbey hey and the referee awards a penalty to abbey hey. The number 8 takes the penalty for abbey hey and slots it in the bottom left corner and makes it 1-0 to Abbey hey.
Maine road will feel subdued after that goal as it was the first chance of the half for abbey hey which was against the run of play. It would be a real test of character for the young Maine road team.
52 mins abbey hey have another good chance to edge ahead in the tie but the number 7 loses his composure and fires over the bar.
60 min Matthew Morgan is played in by Jamie roe and produces a good save by the keeper
70 min Maine road beginning to prevail and showing there fitness levels as abbey hey begin to tire and the young Maine road team applying a lot of pressure on the abbey hey back four.
75 min a chance waiting for anyone to strike the ball falls to jack Langford who strikes it well but a good save from the keeper keeps Maine road at bay and the tie still remains 1-0.
80mins jack poxon picks up the ball about 28 yards from goal and a wonder strike from him flys past the keeper into the roof of the net. The keeper looks dissapointed with himself but he had no chance with that one. 1 all! Extra time
Corner ball to road as more pressure is applied to abbey heys tiring defence. The tie is turning in Maine roads favour A battle in midfield and the abbey hey midfielder slips and it seems he bangs his head off a players knee or boot and is in a lot of pain causing him serious distress.
An ambulance is called immediately for the player as he is in serious pain.
As time ticks away the referee makes the sensible decision to call the game to a stop and abandoned the game.A real melancholy atmosphere is felt around the ground and the game ends on a sad note which doesn't reflect how the game was played for the rest of minutes
Overall Maine road showed true grit and determination to stay put in a performance tonight with an injury hit side. The boys showed great character to get themselves back in the game after going one nil down and the magic of the cup produced a wonderful goal from jack poxon to level the tie Maine road send there best wishes to the abbey hey player who was seriously hurt and send their best wishes and hope he makes a speedy recovery.
