More Jammers Cup success in FA Trophy

Following his hat trick last week goal machine Charlee Hughes hits four opportunist goals this week to help Maldon and Tiptree beat Cray Valley FC

Maldon and Tiptree FC V Cray Valley FC FA Trophy Saturday 12 October 2019

Jammers boss Wayne Brown made just one change from last weeks starting line up with Al-Amin Kazeem replacing the injured Kojo Awotwi.

After Maldon and Tiptree defeated FA Vase winners Chertsey Town last week it was a coincidence to be playing the losing finalists, Cray Valley FC, this week in the FA Trophy.

Both teams made strong starts with good football being played along the floor on a surface that held up well to belie the dreadfully wet conditions. The home side got in the first close call when William Cracknell put in a low cross that saw Charlee Hughes's flick go just the wrong side of the far upright. Play was generally confined to midfield but the visitors made the breakthrough after 14 minutes to be the first opposing team this season to score the first goal in any match. It came from a wicked free kick curled into the home penalty area where Ashley Sains rose highest to plant his header into the back of the net. Stung by this reverse the Jammers responded strongly and equalised after 14 minutes when a low free kick by Laste Dombaxe travelled into the danger area where Hughes was on the spot to jab the ball home. Shortly after this a Dombaxe corner was headed on by Hughes for Jorome Slew to try a cheeky back heel that visiting keeper Andrew Walker saved before Cray's Anthony Edgar saw his 20 metre free kick just saved at the post by home keeper Ben McNamara. McNamara was called into action again when Francis Babalola fired in a shot from a narrow angle that the keeper just kept out with his boot but it was the home side who scored next, when after 30 minutes, Slew played in Danny Parish to get a low 25 metre shot away that Walker could not hold and Hughes pounced on the loose ball to force the rebound home. Some fine passing in midfield and some good approach play by the visitors was spoilt by their failure to be incisive enough in the home penalty area and although Jack Sammoutis tested McNamara with a 20 metre drive that the keeper saved it was the home side who showed how it should be done with another goal. This came just before half time on 43 minutes when Cracknell and Parish combined well down the right before Parish's centre was put home by Hughes to register another hat trick.

Half Time Maldon and Tiptree FC 3 Cray Valley FC 1

As in the first half the home side had a good chance of a goal early on when Slew's great run finished with a cross that Hughes slid into but only to see his effort go just wide of the far post. It was the visitors who controlled the majority of the play but their continued failure in front of goal left them with little reward. Cray's Denzel Gayle did get a good shot away after turning well on the edge of the penalty area but McNamara was able to make the save before the home side matched this when Parish's strong 15 metre shot was well saved by Walker. The home sides Slew then fired in a shot from a narrow angle that flew just past the far post before the visitors narrowed the goal gap with a second score after 64 minutes. Sammoutis did well to break through a couple of tackles just outside the home penalty area before playing a fine ball through to Babalola who moved forward to round McNamara before pushing home into an empty net. Stung by this reverse the home side pushed forward and Dombaxe saw his 20 metre shot pushed away one handed by Walker and it took the Jammers just two minutes to reinstate the two goal lead when on 66 minutes Hughes showed fine anticipation to get to Stephane Ngamvoulou's fine cross before Walker and a defender to convert at the near post. Cray's Babalola then saw his shot just deflected out for a corner before another Dombaxe free kick was just pushed out by Walker before on 84 minutes Maldon and Tiptree sealed the game up with a fifth goal when Dombaxe and Tyrique Hyde combined to give Slew some space to fire a first time effort across the goal and into the far corner. In added time Slew almost added a further goal but Walker did extremely well to push out Slew's effort from close range at his near post.

Final score Maldon and Tiptree FC 5 Cray Valley FC 2
