Maldon and Tiptree finish comfortable winners against Felixstowe and Walton

Maldon and Tiptree FC v Felixstowe and Walton FC Extra Preliminary round FA Trophy 28 September 2019

Wayne Brown made two changes to the starting line up from last weeks FA Cup game against Wingate and Finchley with Lance Atkins and Sam Coombes coming in for Al-Amin Kazeem and Stephane Ngamvoulou.

The confident home side hit the ground running right from the kick off with Danny Parish controlling a long goal kick before shooting from the edge of the penalty area only for visiting keeper Jack Spurling to save well before a long pass forward found the speedy Jorome Slew and he twisted and turned to move forward and make a shooting chance but he hit a good low effort just wide of the far post. Parish was then denied by Spurling's outstretched boot when the forward's shot from the edge of the penalty area almost found its way into the net but Parish had better fortunate after 16 minutes when what looked a pretty innocuous challenge was deemed worthy of a penalty kick by the referee which Parish slotted home with a firm shot to the keepers right. The visitors vulnerability to the ball over the top was fully exploited by the Jammers with Charlee Hughes, Slew and Parish getting good possession inside the visitors penalty box but the final move or pass was thwarted by the visitors defence which often amounted to the defence and midfield combined with the result that Felixstowe and Walton rarely threatened the home goal. Hughes put one stinging effort just wide of the far post before Parish whipped a shot in that Spurling saved well then Slew showed his speed down the left to get to the byline before getting a cross over that flew narrowly wide. The home side did not really need any help from the visitors defence but they got a huge helping of it after 34 minutes when a ball played into the visitors half was misdirected by a visiting defender straight into Parish's path who was left with a clear run at goal and he took the ball on before finishing past the advancing Spurling. More close calls for the away side followed but the home forwards just missed that extra bit of steadiness in front of goal with the result that the teams went off at halftime with Felixstowe and Walton rather fortunate to only be two goals down at the break.

Half Time Maldon and Tiptree FC 2 Felixstowe and Walton FC 0

The half time introduction of Felixstowe and Walton substitute Thomas Debenham and a determination to play further forward saw the visitors enjoying some possession for the first quarter of the second half but goal scoring chances were almost non existent and this failure was duly punished after 59 minutes with a third goal for the home side. Laste Dombaxe played a short corner to Parish and although there looked little strength in his shot the ball moved through a crowd of players past Spurling, who was presumably unsighted, and finished in the far corner of the net. The visitors then got a rare effort near to goal when Jamal Wiggins headed Stuart Ainsley's left wing corner over the bar before back came the home side with substitute Stephane Ngamvoulou putting Slew through on goal but Spurling did extremely well to block the shot away. The prolific Slew missed a great chance to add to his goal tally but after great work by Lance Akins and William Cracknell down the right the ball found the forward in space close to goal but he miscued his effort and the ball was cleared for a corner. Ngamvoulou then created a shooting chance for Parish but he saw his shot saved by Spurling then Slew's fine run forward ended with Hughes giving Parish a good shooting opportunity but he put his effort over the bar before another rare visitors move upfield ended with Joseph Bloomfield hitting Debenham's pass over the bar. The Jammers finally achieved more success in front of goal after 68 minutes when Kojo Awotwi gained possession before moving strongly forward to give Hughes a shooting chance which saw his low effort seem to take a deflection before finishing in the corner of the net. On 73 minutes the home side added a fifth goal when Tyrique Hyde went on a superb run forward past a number of opponents before releasing Slew who went through unchallenged to easily beat Spurling. Further home substitute Hanza Kaid then stung Spurling's hands with a strong shot before Spurling did well to push away a Slew shot after he and Parish had combined to make the opening then the visitors Jordan Matthews hit the visitors best chance over the bar after he had been gifted possession on the edge of the home penalty area.
