Maldon and Tiptree prove their own worst enemies as they go down to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to an eager Burnham Ramblers

By Dave Garwood

Burnham Ramblers FC v Maldon and Tiptree FC Ryman League One North Monday 25 August

The Jammers could have almost won the game in the first 10 minutes but poor finishing let them down, as it did for most of the match. In only the second minute a long kick by visiting keeper Jack Giddens was headed on by Leon McKenzie to leave Tony Martin through and clear on goal but his weak shot was well blocked by home keeper Matt Belcher then Martin got a good low skimming shot in that Belcher just held. The visitors Jack Stevenson then did well to keep possession as he went through a number of tackles but then spoiled it all by shooting wildly over before a quick free kick by the visitors again put Martin clear on goal but again he did not make the best of the clear chance and Belcher was able to block the ball clear. For the first 15 minutes the visitors passing game had given them almost all the play but Burnham gradually shut down their opponents more quickly and started to create some openings for themselves. None more so than on 12 minutes when Bertie Brayley's cross was headed back by Liam Burgess to L'Heureux Menga close in to goal and it took an exceptional save from Giddens (pictured) to keep his goal intact. The home side continued to press and Brayley sent Tyler Hayes down the line to whip in a good diagonal cross that was just cleared before Menga had a clear chance when rounding Giddens but then saw his effort go just wide of the far post. Where Maldon and Tiptree's passing early on had been crisp and quick they now laboured to get anything forward with the result that Burnham's defence had ample time to organise and cut out any balls forward. Menga continued to be a menace for the home side and he was only just stopped by the Jammers Giddens and Danny Johnson after Burgess's through ball almost put him clear before home keeper Belcher again showed a safe pair of hands to hold Joe Pearman's shot. Maldon and Tiptree then came close to getting the first goal when from a Jack Stevenson corner McKenzie got up well at the near post but his header slammed against the bar before coming out but it was the home side who drew first blood after 34 minutes when a clear hand ball by a home player was missed by the referee and Menga took advantage to cross for Burgess to fire home with Giddens wondering where his defence had got to. Towards the end of the half the visitors Martin dribbled through the home defence but at just the last moment lost control and Belcher was able to gather before Perman tried his luck from distance but fired over.

The Jammers again had the better of the half's early play with a Stevenson shot from the penalty area edge being well held by Belcher before a good passing move ended with a Pearman centre going along the home goal area with no one able to get a touch. Home keeper Belcher then pulled out his best save to turn McKenzie's 25 metre shot over the bar before a Pearman free kick into the
home goal was missed by both defenders and attackers to go just past the far post. Burnham's Burgess then missed a good chance to increase the home lead when he was put free on the left but took far too long and defender Johnson was able to clear then a first time shot from the left by Brayley was well taken by Giddens. Although the visitors were getting a bit more of the play they persisted with a slow build up which played right into the eager home sides hands as their much quicker and more direct style continually thwarted the visitors attack and put pressure on a visiting defence that looked a bit uncertain all the game. A long clearance by the home side then put Menga into a good position on the left but his fierce shot hit the bar before rebounding out but the home side increased their lead after 89 minutes when a long ball down the right was well collected by substitute Isaac Aubynn before turning his covering defender much too easily and getting a cross over that found Menga all alone to shoot easily past the helpless Giddens. During the extended added time the home side fell back to protect their lead and Belcher again did well to save a Pearman effort low down to his left but he could not prevent the visitors getting a consolation goal after 94 minutes when a Sypho Mtyana cross found the head of Grant Eagle and he put his effort in at the far post.
