Maldon and Tiptree add two late goals to see off stubborn Romford.

Romford FC v Maldon and Tiptree FC Bostik League One North Saturday 23 March 2019

Maldon and Tiptree's team sheet saw two new additions in Percy Kiangegeni, who started the match in place of Stephane Ngamvoulou and Tariq Issa who featured on the substitutes bench. Other changes from last weeks defeat by Coggeshall Town saw Tobi Coker and Kojo Awotwi re introduced in place of Liam Hope and Laste Dombaxe.

A light ball and bobbly pitch did little to help either team to play much along the ground and the first 45 minutes generally passed with little excitement or goal mouth action. The few exceptions saw home keeper Harry Aldridge block Kojo Awotwi's close range shot at the near post before the visitors Tobi Coker did well to go on a run from the halfway line to inside the home penalty area before shooting wide. On 28 minutes Maldon and Tiptree fashioned a goal when Coker and Awotwi combined to play Eddie Louis Dsane through and he side stepped a defender before firing home. The jammers should then have added to their score but Jorome Slew fired straight at Aldridge when put through and Tobi Coker hit the rebound well over the bar. Romford's only threat on goal came late in the half when Danny Cossington hooked his effort over the bar from Toby Barlow's left wing corner before Aldridge again did well to push away Slew's fierce strike from the penalty area edge. And that was about it for a lack lustre first 45 minutes.

The second half again started slowly but sprang to life after 53 minutes with a surprise equaliser for the home side when a left wing corner flew into the goal area before bouncing up nicely for John Maskell to head powerfully home. Rattled by this it took the Jammers just two minutes to respond when Matthew Briggs sent a firm ball into Dsane who controlled and turned in one movement before striking his shot firmly beyond Aldridge and into the net. Pushing for further goals the visitors Rob Girdlestone crossed for Slew to see his header saved before Dsane and Briggs combined to give the latter a shooting chance but he fired his effort wide. On 61 minutes Romford took full advantage of some poor defensive play by Maldon and Tiptree when a long ball upfield was not dealt with and Greg Akpele gained possession before expertly lobbing the advancing Jammers keeper Ben McNamara. Buoyed by this the home side got in another rare attack when Ayo Olukoga
did well to get down the right before crossing to Akpele but he could not keep his shot down as the ball flew over the bar. As the game moved into its last quarter Maldon and Tiptree gradually applied more and more pressure on the home rearguard with quick moves opening up gaps in their ranks. A sweeping passing move down the pitch after 76 minutes ended with short cross into the goalmouth which found Last Dombaxe, who had only just came on as a late substitute, and he had little trouble nodding home. Awotwi then shot just wide of the post before Maldon and Tiptree put the game to bed after 83 minutes when Dsane gained possession from a throw in before moving past a couple of defenders and then putting Slew in the clear to fire his shot past Aldridge. Briggs almost got himself on the score sheet when a speculative effort from wide on the left hit the bar and went over before Slew also struck the woodwork from close range after Tariq Issa had created the opening.
