Captain and keeper Ben McNamara (pictured) was the Maldon and Tiptree hero as he pulled out two wonderful penalty saves to see his team through after a penalty shoot out.

Maldon and Tiptree FC v Merstham FC Velocity Trophy Tuesday 28 January 2020

There were three changes to the home starting line up from the last league game against Tilbury with William Cracknell, the injured Lance Atkins and cup tied Conor Hubble dropping out and Martyn Stokes, Charlee Hughes and the fit again Danny Parish returning to take their places.

Almost from the first whistle the game seemed to lack much intensity with the visitors generally content to drop back in numbers to prevent the free scoring home attack any space or time on the ball. Goalmouth incidents were at a premium with the home side tending to play a long ball game rather than work the ball downfield with quick short passes. With often four forwards strung across the pitch the home attack found little room in which to work any openings with the only real threat to either goal com1ng from free kicks or corner kicks. Danny Parish was his usual busy self and he put in one of the closer efforts with a shot across goal that flew wide. The visitors Chace Jaquart had a busy half and was usually at the centre of any dangerous play from Merstham but they had no more success in getting efforts on goal although the home sides Charlee Hughes did get one dangerous centre over that flew across goal with no one able to get a touch and the half ended with most spectators thinking the second half must be better than the first.

As it turned out the second half was no great improvement on the first with again little happening to give much concern to either keeper with again, free and corner kicks providing the most danger. The home sides Hamza Kaid did provide some threats to the visitors goal when he was introduced as a second half substitute with Jorome Slew and Hughes just being denied by visiting keeper Matthew Pierson before home keeper Ben McNamara was called into action with a rare save from an Omar Folkes header. With little likely hood of any goals the game drifted to a penalty shoot out which did show rather more goal scoring ability as Merstham converted 4 out of 6 with 2 saved by McNamara with the home side converting 5 out of 6 with visiting keeper Pierson able to only save one.
