Terriers title challenge blown away

On a windswept morning in Rotherham, Malin produced a professional performance to take the points in a top of the table clash.

After the previous week's tousing of Bessacar, everyone was under no illusions that this game was going to be much more challenging. The pitch was decent but the conditions were not. As kick off approached, a gale force wind seemed to build up which was going to make things even tougher.

The starting line up was changed back to the usual 4-4-2 with BROWNY and MATTY back together up front and JAMIE getting a start on the left after his first man of the match performance.

Whether by luck or good judgement on the captains behalf, we started the game with the wind behind us and this was to prove useful in helping us to take early control of the game. A scrappy start was epitomised by poor clearances by their young keeper and centre halves who both seemed tentative under pressure from the deadly duo up front. It was this combo that would lead to the first goal.

BROWNY worked his way into the box and found MATTY around the penalty spot. There didn't appear to be much room but whatever MATTY had whispered in the defenders ears in the first 5 minutes seemed to have had an affect as nobody wanted to put a tackle in on him. Eventually, after manoeuvring some space for himself he smashed it home to give us the perfect start.

Only a couple more minutes passed before the 2nd goal followed. Once again, bad defending had a part to play as the clumsy centre backs failed to clear their lines. A ball into the box fell to NATH whose deflected effort dropped to their man, MATTY was the first to notice their slow reactions and charged in to claim the goal from a rebounded challenge. It was no goal of the season contender but it was effective all the same. 0-2.

At that point, it looked like the score could be anything. Treeton's young heads were down and with the conditions in our favour for now, it looked like a case of how many again but to their favour, they didn't fold and actually created a couple of chances. DAN was never really tested but we at least knew we were in a game.

A quiet spell in the game was broken by a bit of quality from the other half of the M & S partnership. This time, BROWNY was set free by JAMES and with the wind behind the ball, it looked like he was running out of space. But no. Out of nowhere he magicked up a delightful lob with his left foot leaving the keeper stranded and Malin with a 3-0 lead. That ended the scoring for the half and in most peoples minds, ended the game.

Frustratingly, that would be the end of the scoring for the title favourites too. Despite a lot of pressure in the second half, nobody could find it within themselves to bag another. Chances came and went and then with the game edging towards the final whistle, Treeton managed to grab a lifeline. A free kick swung into the box found the young lanky kid free on the edge of the box. His flick had enough on it to find it into the bottom corner and things no longer looked as straight forward.

There would be no great comeback though. A few half chances were all that we had to worry about and with GAV and DAVE in sterling form at the back, there would be no way through. 1-3. Game over.

After living up to his nickname of Vidic, GAV deservedly took the man of the match award. Well done pal!
