Malvern RFC is sad to announce that we have just heard of the passing of Sammy Handy. One of the colourful characters of local rugby, Sammy was a Malvern man through and through. After he finished playing, he was seen at first XV games for many years wielding the "Magic Sponge", which in the days before physios was the answer to any on field injuries. Perhaps the crowning moment of his career was running on to the field at Twickenham to the sound of the Malvern crowd chanting his name!
Sammy was a local character, who worked at Morgans before taking retirement, which allowed him to indulge his great passion of the railways. I often met him as he was setting off on one of his journeys and he would tell me with great delight of his journey plans for the day.
Now we have funeral details as above we will be able to celebrate Sammy in the time honoured tradition.
