A very competitive and entertaining match was played under hosts Wilmslow RUFC’s floodlights, the first ever girls’ rugby match played at the Memorial Ground.

Manchester were pleased to have been invited by Mayfield Secondary School to play their U16 Girls as part of their British tour. With a large touring squad, Manchester U15 Girls decided to invite Cheshire RFU neighbours Glossop and Northwich to join forces. As a result a squad of 27 players made themselves available on a Wednesday evening at Wilmslow RUFC.

Despite not having even trained together, and with several players in unfamiliar positions, the Canadians were given a tough game, unable to break down a determined defence in the first half. Throughout the second half it was necessary to use rolling subs which the Cheshire girls coped with very well indeed (and the coaches didn’t do too badly either!). The loss of shape that this caused and the few tries conceded towards the end, was well justified by giving everyone in the large squad a chance to play against the Canadian visitors.

Manchester Girls Rugby appreciates Wilmslow RUFC’s hospitality in making their impressive (floodlit!) facilities available to Manchester Girls Rugby. We are also grateful for the enthusiastic support of the players and coaches from Glossop and Northwich.
