The Spartans first game in 3 South proved to be a close encounter as the sides were evenly matched throughout the game. For 30 minutes neither side scored as the defences held firm. New Brighton opened the scoring as they worked the ball into an overlap on the right as the Spartans ran out of defenders. The conversion was made. New Brighton led 7-0.

Early in the second half the Spartans got themselves on the scoreboard from a driving maul as Simon G (Chucky) touched down at the back of the maul as a body of Spartans players drove over the try line. The conversion was missed by Smithy. 7-5 New Brighton.
15 minutes later the Spartans took the lead as fly half Matt W sprinted through a gap in the defence to score under the posts. Smithy converted the Spartans took the lead 12-7.
New Brighton continued to pressure the Spartans defence and scored in the corner to tie the score at 12-12. The conversion was missed. The game was opening up as both sides were tiring. It was from and open play break that New Brighton kept the ball alive and had runners in support one who ran the ball in under the posts. The conversion was made. 19-12 for New Brighton.
With 8 minutes left the Spartans tried to level the scores but New Brighton held firm to win 19-12 on the day the result could have gone anyway in the end New Brighton just edged it on the day. The game was played in good spirit thank you to New Brighton for providing and enjoyable and very competitive first game in the 3 South division.
